Just stumbled upon this photo on Ebay.
Elvis signing autographs for fans in Nashville on February 25-26, 1965 while he was in town for the recording session for Harum Scarum (Harem Holiday).

Nice, Brian, thank you.

Thoughts;

a) EP looked very good during this period: perhaps he'd dieted expecting / hoping the film to be some kind of Valentino role

b) The lively crowd would suggest he was still very popular in early '65

c) Who's the guy in the heavy overcoat behind Elvis? Is that Joe's forehead and hairline to Elvis' right?

Agreed, cool shot. I believe that is Joe, and Larry Geller to the far right with Richard Davis' back to the camera, and Marty in front of him(?).

Elvis had expected his new MGM film to be something special. Plus, he'd just turned thirty. The crowd might have been excited since the Roustabout soundtrack had hit Billboard US Pop #1 just weeks before. As noted, it appears Elvis brought Richard Davis, Marty Lacker, Joe Esposito and Larry Geller along. The dude in the overcoat could be MGM's music director, Fred Karger.

Joe is directly in front of Elvis with the black jacket with the fur collar just left in front of the woman with the scarf.

This famous bootleg cover shot must not be from this February 24th Nashville visit then:

Memphis Tennessee (Audifon AFNS 67670, 1983)

Perhaps the bootleg LP candid was taken when Elvis returned to Nashville on March 9, to overdub the three unfinished "Harum Scarum" numbers?

Whether you're black or white, whether you're country, redneck or a freak, young or old, from Moscow, London or Memphis, Elvis Presley will still be the King of rock 'n' roll to me. He really and truly will.

Doc, I don´t think Elvis was in Nashville on March 9, 1965.
Neither "The Complete Recording Sessions" nor "Elvis Sessions" mention such a session.
"Day-by-Day" says on March 9 that Elvis reported to MGM for preproduction on Harum Scarum and after wardrobe tests recorded vocal tracks for the instrumental backups that were made in Nashville.

As far as I can understand Elvis didn´t return to Nashville until the May 1966 sessions.

Could it be that Elvis went back and forth between Memphis and Nashville and that the photo indeed is from February 24-26, 1965?
Looks like it is snowing in the photo and according to newspapers from Kingsport, Tn it was snowing during those days. Kingsport was the closest newspaper I could find from that period of time.

Sincerely
Brian

At least two internet session sites say otherwise. For example:

Overdub Session for M.G.M.: Harum Scarum, March 9, 1965
Studio: RCA Studio B, Nashville, Tennessee
Musical Director: Fred Karger, Gene Nelson
http://www.elvisrecordings.com/s650309.htm

Ernst himself cites March 9 as well, with the location implied as Nashville:

980700_A Life In Music_Jorgensen p 194.JPG
Ernst Jorgensen, Elvis Presley: A Life In Music (New York: St. Martin's Press, July 1998)

So ... could the photo be from Nashville on March 9, either before or after the overdub session?

Hmmm :? Something´s strange here.

The website above sites Nashville on March 9, 1965 as an overdub session (do we know where the website editor got his information from?) and Joe Tunzi´s "Elvis Sessions" (the 1993 edition) has March 18, 1965 as an overdub session in Nashville while Ernst´ "Day-by-Day" have him reporting to MGM on March 9 and after wardrobe tests recording vocal tracks for the instrumental backups that were made in Nashville.

My guess is that at the time of "A Life in Music" (July 1998) Ernst didn´t have the information about the session in Hollywood on March 9, 1965 but only knew that Elvis made overdubs on March 9.
When he published "Day-by-Day" (October 1999) he had become aware of the session out in Hollywood so that´s probably the reason for the confusion of the session.

So I don´t think the photo is from Nashville on March 9, 1965.
My guess is still that the photo is from Feb 24-26, 1965.

Sincerely
Brian

The March 18 Nashville date had no Elvis involvement. I agree that the March 9 overdubs could well have been in California, but there's no confirmation on either session website, or from Ernst. Another possibility is Elvis did the three "Harum Scarum" overdubs in Nashville the following Monday, March 1.

Yesm thats also what i was thinking, there are few pictures from that sessions, from the Session vol.3 book by Tunzi ( still dont have it , but its on the cover) elvis wearin a black shirt with a black jacket....and the one with the cigarret , elvis wearin white shirt with i think Blue jacket...so i think that this picture with the cigarret is from the overdubs sessions....
