"What Now My Love" may not be what the typical Elvis fan might have wanted to see, but his commitment is undeniable in most of the versions we have.
Presley loved a crescendo finish, and showed it on his records as far back as "It's Now Or Never" (1960) or "There's Always Me' (1961), and the live versions from the 1970s fit right in.
That said, the delightful, uptempo 1966 home demo issued by FTD is a personal favorite:
One of my all time favorite Elvis songs. I agree that the song probably speaks to Elvis' personal life at that particular time. His "big" ending is amazing. Yes, the Aloha version is amazing, but so too, was the version I heard Elvis do in 1973. Raised the roof! I never tire of this song. On a couple of versions I think I hear Elvis saying things like, "Yeah," or "I like that."
The home recordings is okay for this song
The live performances show what Elvis was capable to achieve vocally
What Now My Love describes the mood and times if his career I feel and the song It's Over too
