Jailhouse Rock & King Creole - Revisited

#436167

Post by ColinB »

OK I lied - not a 'proper' review of the film, but just something that occurred to me.

That famous 'staged' sequence of the title song.

Always felt something was wrong with it, but couldn't put my finger on it.

But looking at the avatar of our very own 'The Purple Gang' member, I realised !

They've got a pole thing that runs up to the upper level of the 'prison block'.

Elvis leans against it, then slides down !

But prisons don't have poles like that !

It's fire stations that have those !

It's taken over 50 years for that to dawn on me !

Oh well.....................

Colin

I'll just have to bow to your obviously much wider knowledge of prison interiors.

Well, I've watched Porridge and countless documentaries.

Rather than put in things to speed up getting from top to bottom, they put up barriers to slow down [or rather stop] anyone trying to make that trip !

It's the firemen who need that speedy descent, not prisoners !

But you're not making any sense.

Dancing to the firestation rock just doesn't sound or scan so well.

Well, I wasn't suggesting they should have changed the song !

It had to be in a prison, didn't it ?

It's just that the pole belonged elsewhere.............................

Anyway why would they send Vince to a firestation for manslaughter? That would be a crazy story line.

If you think that's bad Rob, then I best not get into what Sad Sack did with that wooden chair.

Well, no, actually, but I saw what happened to Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia.

Does that count ?

Now just hold on a moment. What happens to Elvis in Jailhouse Rock isn't real, but what happens to Peter O'Toole in Lawrence Of Arabia is?

Well, I never said that, did I ?

I simply stated that I saw what O'Toole's fate was in that film, although I've never been in a real Turkish prison.

So I have no idea whether the Lawrence of Arabia depiction was accurate or not.

Firemen's poles, however, were conspicious by their absence.............

Well if there were no firemen's poles in the Lawrence Of Arabia sequences we can, I think, conclude that the depiction was not accurate. Can't we? Now, hold on, I'm getting confused here. Did we decide that "Firestation Rock" was the original lyric or not? And were there any Poles on the Titanic?

And were there any Poles on the Titanic? Yes there were, & a few Hungarians too...

One of the Hungarians on the Titanic was a bit of a hero. I don't remember the details. Something to do with rescuing a child who had slipped overboard and everyone gave up on it except him.

I read about it years ago - around the time when the wreck was first located.

So, Colin---that was the only difference you found between a real prison and this dance sequence? I see others.

Well, I didn't actually say that.

Not a 'mistake' as such, but when that lag gets coshed into unconsciousness by the screw & Elvis moves forward, I always expect him to get bashed too !

But the screw just starts tapping his other hand with his cosh in time to the beat !

Elvis was obviously one of the 'untouchables' !

So ekenee, what differences have you spotted ?

I think we should be told !
