Just when you thought you'd seen it all, outside of Hollywood this is the weirdest ELVIS footage I've ever seen, still surprises left for collector's, anyone got a link to the Piped Pier footage, must be on You Tube somewhere?

Re: Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!
Maybe the turban originates in the same part of his brain as the fringe/bangs did in one of the Charlotte concerts in 76. Does he think "This will shake them"? Or did someone say "You wouldn't dare..."?

Re: Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!
Amazing footage indeed.
Elvis was always different, in the Fifties when he started to wear pink jackets and black pants he was already trying to shock people. When he turned up at GK's wedding in 1970 with leather gloves and flashlight (which Marty Lacker tried in vain to take away from him) he was being outrageous. It was his nature to be different, same thing here with the turban, Elvis was different in everything he did.
And I find it amazing that some people are able to say from this footage that he was 'stoned'.
Cheers,
Simon

Re: Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!
In either Elvis What Happened or Revelations From Memphis Mafia books they tell that Elvis wore a turban when he was into psychic healing. I think it was Sonny West's kid whom Elvis tried to heal and the kid went for the jewel on the turban. Elvis got upset because the kid was ruining his show. As always Elvis went all the way. When he wanted to be a cop he got the badge, guns and a full uniform. When he played football he had his own team with uniforms and cheerleaders. When he wanted to be a cowboy he had a ranch and everything that goes with it. It was just natural for him to put on a turban when he though he was a psychic healer.

Thanks for posting. Interesting footage. Bizarre that Elvis is wearing a Turban, but it isn't difficult to conclude what influenced such a decision.

Re: Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!
Fascinating stuff. It looks like the footage has been ripped from a video cassette -- note the tell-tale band of noise at the bottom of the image. Who owns the original recording? It would be nice to see this fully restored with an HD transfer straight from the film reel. Then again, this is a start. Pretty cool.

Re: Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!
One might think if Elvis was "stoned," Dave Hebler would have mentioned it in his description of the event. But neither he nor "Elvis: What Happened?" co-author Steve Dunleavy say anything of the sort. And this was a book that did not shy away from exploiting Elvis' drug issues.
In fact, the footage depicts Dave's first time meeting Elvis, and the most he recalls is that it was very warm that September day, and it seemed odd that Elvis had on the turban and heavy coat.
Frankly, one sees a slightly sad figure. Elvis looks lost, which in many ways he was at this time.
More importantly, what this footage -- either posted by Barry Elwood or a relative -- proves is that such unreleased footage is just the tip of the iceberg. It is a shame that the powers that be seem to have no interest in gathering such footage, which stretches back to at least Jan-Feb 1955, and creating an "Anthology"-type of DVD project.
Elvis and his fans deserve no less, but here we are in 2010 with nothing of the kind on the horizon.

Re: Amazing 'Turban' footage from '72!
I also got a kick seeing Sonny West taking his bodyguard job very seriously (he stands there, very serious, surveying the room)....
So Elvis didn't have a goofy sense of humour and any odd behavior on his part must automatically be attributed to drugs.... Riiiight....
