WiFi Flatbed Scanners???

I been cyber-windows-shopping for a new scanner.

I want something about $400-$650, large format, negative-slide attachment, etc. And I want to be able to be very choosy about the resolution. I need to make hi-res scans for use in HD and 4K videos. For a new venture.

And WIFI!!!! I want WiFi!

Everything I have seen is USB 2.O! What's up with that? I have a laptop. A beast! I don't want a new computer tied to a whole cabled workstation. I have plans to add RAM to make my laptop 32GB w/my 1 TB hard disk being just fine. The processor is quad-core. And maybe get a new NVIDIA card with 4GB VRAM. Perfect.

But I can't scan without a cable? WTF? It's 2015! I am down with tech now. And yet . . . scanners are stuck in the 90s?

The only WiFi scanners are multi-function devices. I don't need a printer/fax. I already have a small and useful inkjet. I want a dedicated wireless scanner that is ready for 2015! A big mutha! If I can watch an HD film over WiFi, why can't I scan with a high-end scanner?

What is the deal with that? And where might I find what I'm looking for?

I'm not understanding what you mean by wanting a "Wireless" scanner? Are you referring to battery power? Just about all scanners are standalone as a scan function as most new scanners can scan straight to an embedded SD card. The wireless/USB options are mainly for the networking/printing features and are necessarily not needed just to scan a photo/document. If you are needing a scanner to scan negatives/photos a wireless option will only allow the finished job to be uploaded to a PC/laptop etc. that's why normally the wireless options are used mainly for printing which allows data to be uploaded to a printer, where as you don't upload data to a scanner - you scan it from the scanner.

You really got me confused on this one.

Nothing to do with the power cord. I mean scan to PC. Wirelessly. Why not?

I just don't want to have to connect a USB cable from the scanner to the laptop. That's very awkward in my current set-up. I use a large portable lap-desk, not a real desk. And a big laptop. USB cables to external devices are not at all helpful.

Why can't it give me the scan via WiFi? The multifunctions do it, but they are inadequate to precise scanning. It's amateurish and imprecise scanning. All I want is this: you put the item on the glass, and you get it on your PC (laptop) via WiFi. Instead of a USB cable.

That's all I wanted, but they don't make it that way. USB 2.0. I looked and looked.

Epson has something called scan to cloud. Not exactly what I want. I want scan to PC via WiFi. Put the photo or negative or slide on it, and the connection to the PC should be via WiFi. And then you select your settings, do a preview, fix it up, and then scan. Via WiFi. Why not?

Can I do it all with a USB stick? But how would I preview? On the scanner itself?

I don't understand why they have to use USB 2.0 in this day and age. Everything else is wireless.

I think the term you are missing in your wireless search is "Bluetooth". Most of the major brands have scanners on the market that are now Bluetooth compatible. Also on the market are "scan to cloud" devices like the Epson Perfection V370.

Can Bluetooth handle the quantity of data? If so, that's great! What links to which products would you suggest?

I was just wondering if a high quality scanner without USB connection was available. But those are all multi-use scanners/printers/faxes. And, although I only have an el cheapo triple function device, the software for scanning is hideous. It's an after thought. I had hoped that perhaps there was a high quality scanner with wireless.

I have an Epson Perfection v370 scanner. Haven't used it for scanning to the cloud but I can recommend it for just about everything else. Scanned some slides with a very good result.
