For me it's a toss-up between Dixieland Rocks and disc 2 of Dixieland Delight.

I agree. It won't be found on any Elvis CD. That was a complete waste of space. With his entire catalog he does a half ass version of LD? Every version is horrible, imo.

Re: Little Darlin'
I normally give this song a miss so I've only ever heard two versions - the one on the Moody Blue album , and the version from 1975 on Live In Dallas /Elvis Aaron Presley. Of the two, the '75 version is more bearable. As someone has already pointed out, we have gems like Wear My Ring Around Your Neck, I Need Your Love Tonight, Devil In Disguise, A Mess O' Blues,Wearin That Loved On Look etc never performed live even once and yet we got covers of songs like this. Although I'm not sure I'd want to hear 77 versions of the Presley classics I mentioned.

The version on Big Boss Man is okay to
I think this would be kinda' fun to watch live - Elvis seems to enjoy himself anyway.
But I do think it is a strange song for him to choose to do live...

Here you go:
..
Elvis Presley "Little Darlin'" (home demo, May 1958)
Singing background to the 45 of "Little Darlin'" by the Diamonds
Prior to the start, he sings a bit of the Tune Weavers hit, "Happy Happy Birthday Baby"

THANK YOU! I can't say that I consider that the best version. However, his vocals are far superior to any other version.

Forgot that one.Two things that would have made that one the best one is if he had of just shut the turn table off and Eddie along with it.

I never have been able to figure out what song Eddie is singing.
one golden eye, golden b...
tell myself that I
... of my eye.
it always ...
when I'm with you
It always happen ...
There is also a short clip of somebody singing two lines of: Hard headed woman.

I agree.r&b wrote:On a Gladiolas comp CD
This 31 track compilation released in 1995 is a must. "Little Darlin'" by The Gladiolas is the opening track, and the band is seen in the front and back of the CD :

Re: Little Darlin'
Indeed, despite everything else, Presley's vocals (backing) are better than any recording he did after that. So it's my pick.Rockin_John wrote:drjohncarpenter wrote:Here you go:

The unfortunate thing about the Diamonds is that they recorded their cover as a parody. You can see them making fun of it during a TV clip from the period. You just want to smack them in the face.

Diamonds "Little Darlin'" (ABC-TV's "Dick Clark Beech-Nut Show," Saturday, February 21, 1959)
I can't imagine how the Gladiolas felt. Their 1957 single on Excello 2101 "co-made" it (with the Diamonds release) to #3 on Cash Box's "Rhythm & Blues Top 20" for 5-18-1957. It reached #41 on Billboard's "Top 100" in the 4-20-1957 issue (while the Diamonds hit #2 on the same chart a week later). They would become Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs in 1959, and nab a #1 with "Stay" the following year.

Re: Little Darlin'
The single itself sounds fine. Maybe they just felt they needed to form some sort of "act" while performing the song on stage and television.

Re: Little Darlin'
Compare it to the Gladiolas recording and you can hear the parody element. The recording was a send-up that became a hit for the Diamonds. And when Elvis added it to his live set in 1975, he clearly did it as a parody of the doo-wop genre.Trevell wrote:The single itself sounds fine. I really don't care if people here on this forum don't like Elvis' version of this song on the "Moody Blue" Lp.
I like it.
