Do The Clam
As I am ripping all my vinyl 180 Gr I have seen that In the album Girl Happy there is a probleme with the song Do The Clam
On the right channel from 2'04 to 2'22 the sound is almost silent.
The problem is on the album collection, the complete master the original album and also in the 180 gr LP.
The sound is there but almost inaudible.

Re: Do The Clam
The song is better in mono. I used to own the 7" single but lost it unfortunately. It's a nice Little ditty. "Do the claaaam, DO the clam, grab your barefoot baby by the ha-a-and!" Yes indeed. I hope and pray that Ernst will someday release a kind of follow-up to "Out In Hollywood" that features only mono versions of the best '60s soundtrack recordings. That would make for a killer album.

Because that's how it was when originally released, so they stuck to it.Phil wrote:the problem is easy to repair so why didn't they repair it?

Re: Do The Clam
When the original master is extended from 2:45 to 3:18 this problem comes to daylight.
On 8 LP The legend lives on (Readers Digest) you'll hear "Do the ........."; the word "clam" is missing.

Re: Do The Clam
If you are talking about the instrumental break, I believe this was done deliberately by RCA due to the fact that part of it is just a duplication of the previous part and I guess they wanted it to sound a bit different so that the duplication was not so obvious.

Re: Do The Clam
No it is not something made deliberately.
The part that is partially silent is different from the part before.
If you put the volume at the maximum it is still almost silent and you don't hear anything on the right chanel.
You can only hear If you normalize only the almost "silent" part.
Of all the Elvis song it is the only song with that kind of problem.

Re: Do The Clam
No you are incorrect it was made deliberately --> do you actually think RCA did not ever notice this if this was actually an error after pressing and re-releasing this LP Master since 1965?? Why someone would question this after 50 years is mind boggling.Phil wrote:No it is not something made .

It is just a way that they intentionally mixed the stereo master to give it a strange effect. Listen to the 1968 - Axis Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix LP and you will also hear some other strange channel shifting stereo effects of the 60's.

Re: Do The Clam
I also believe it was done to extend the length of the song, a bit like Blue River where they repeated the instrumental break to get the track up to two plus minutes.promiseland wrote:Thank you for having a little common sense here at FECC.emjel wrote:If you are talking about the instrumental break, I believe this was done deliberately by RCA due to the fact that part of it is just a duplication of the previous part and I guess they wanted it to sound a bit different so that the duplication was not so obvious.

The song is better unheard. Its the pits. Elvis in 1965, A side material, 10 years after greatness. Geez. Only a fanboy can find this in any way meaningful. It was even made fun of back in the day. 'Does Elvis think he is going to start a new dance craze?' Love those girls screaming at the end of the instrumental break too. How modKeith Richards, Jr. wrote:The song is better in mono.

No! This is just a bad record/song/recording. Elvis should have heaved it into the reject pile. The only thing worse than listening to it is seeing him perform it in the film. Simply painful. And you don't need to be an intellectual to know that. It was a new then low. On the other hand it managed to get far far worse.r&b wrote:The song is better unheard. Its the pits. Elvis in 1965, A side material, 10 years after greatness. Geez. As someone else might say, defending in any way a nominee for the nadir of his career like "Do The Clam" (RCA 47-8500) is sheer lunacy. That "Do The Clam" made #21 on the Billboard "Top 100" (April 3, 1965) and #16 on Cash Box's "Top 100" (March 27, 1965) was testimony to the strength of the Presley name, the recent success of "Viva Las Vegas," and the still-powerful allure of having a new flick, the MGM film "Girl Happy," debuting in the theaters. But it would, as you say, get far, far worse.
And just look at the classic numbers lining the top 40 the week Elvis' horrible single peaked on Cash Box, and then on Billboard. His work should have been just as stellar or even more so, he was that talented. But the next three and a half years would be hell for the devoted fan.

Re: Do The Clam
Not his greatest year Stateside (as we are gleefully reminded here on a daily basis) but right throughout his alleged time as a "washed-up train-wreck, blah blah blah", Presley continued having substantial chart success right across the planet, thus relegating the incessant negatron diatribe to its natural and rightful home in the trashcan of failed rhetoric.
And as long as we're talking charts, I'll add that Do The Clam was a number one smash for The King in Japan back in '65. Personally, I've always liked the song and it's no surprise that it became a chart-topper somewhere.
Important to note that when you're the world's biggest star, influence doesn't end at the borders of your own country... and a few dodgy movies doesn't wipe out a near decade of quality. People's memories aren't that short. In any case, the start of the Comeback was just around the corner in '66. But how many others would've cut off their arm for Presley's continuing worldwide successes in 64/65? Even when far from firing on all cylinders, he was still The King... then, as now.

Indeed. It was worse Stateside than 1964, yet not as bad Stateside as 1966.
If true, it's a sad state of affairs to tout a hit foreign single as an accomplishment in a fallow year musically for a major American artist.Hard Rocker wrote:And as long as we're talking charts, I'll add that Do The Clam was a number one smash for The King in Japan back in '65.
That said, I've never been able to find a credible source which states if the single made #1 in the Land of the Rising Sun. A "smash" indicates many weeks at the top. Can you share how you know this?
