From the February 1959 issue of TV Radio Mirror.

All at Sea with Elvis

Thirteen-year-old Janet Day, daughter of an Army captain, sailed with Elvis on the troopship Randall. Here is the story of Janet and the other teenagers who made the crossing with their favourite singer.

(I hope Davide don´t mind us hijacking this thread a little beyond that September 22nd date.)

I especially like Janets memoirs regarding the Variety Show (Elvis on piano). According to trumpeter / photographer
Harold Heikinnen the Variety Show took place on Sept 30th:.

just 2 minor corrections :
davide wrote:Randy Seaver’s childhood memory.

Two weeks before my birthday in 1958, we sailed out of New York harbor aboard the venerable USS General George
M. Randall, headed for Bremerhaven, West Germany.....
David, these are not Randy Seaver's memories, but the childhood memories of Craig Manson (forrmer Superior judge).
Craig Manson posted his memories on Randy's genealogy blog; http://blog.geneablogie.net/2009/10/04/a-vivid-childhood-memory-my-mother-is-mugged-for-a-picture-of-elvis/
I hope he can provide more info and photos...

I made a typo, my mistake - correct date: Eliabeth was Elvis' secretary from Dec'58 - March'60

I am trying to locate a photo that was on, but since removed, from this site. The caption reads "Steve Sholes is standing to the left of the blond girl (Ann Fulchino, RCA publicist)" Can you re-post or send to me?

Thank you for posting - is it possible to get a clean copy of the photo or does the copyright prevent it? It is a great shot and this is my Aunt Anna, who actually hired Al Wertheimer to Photograph Elvis in 1956. Please let me know if there is any way to share a copy with my family. Thanks!

E-Cat, it's a little frustrating to know your photos do not have any longevity. After a short while, all we see are placeholders, marring some very nice topics.

When a topic disappears to the next page it rarily becomes reactive (only when photo updates are posted)
However, by then, most members have already copied 99 % of the photo's they are interested in.

In addition I have capacity issues, I cannot host a photo forever. And every time I am reorganising my albums,
links will get broken anyhow so photo's will disappear. Besides, I do not like photo to hang around forever in the
picture section because too many have been copied to other websites or were even on sale on Ebay.....
that's even more frustrating...

However if people would like to see a certain photo re-upladed, I can do that within 5 min or people can send
me a pm.

Memphis Tennessee,Alan Fortas (lower left)unknown and George Klien(cropped out) greet Elvis at a fuel stop.
Billy Smith : The troop train that carried him to the Military Ocean Terminal in Brooklyn,New York, had to stop on a spur track in Memphis.I went to the train to see him with my mama and daddy. The sergeant wouldn't let Elvis get off the train, but he let him come to the door,Some of the guys came, like George and Alan. Elvis was really glad to see us.We told him we'd be waiting for him to get home because we were trying to act jolly.I climbed up on the train and told him how much I was going to miss him,and he leaned down and hugged me and said,'Take care, little fella, and stay in touch. I'll be talking to you' We both got tears in our eyes, and then he said 'Don't forget me while I'm gone'
George Klein : This gorgeous brunette came up to me,I don't know if she went to Ole Miss at the time, but she was a typical Ole Miss beautiful girl, and she said her name was Janie Willbanks, and she asked if I would introduce her,I did and about two weeks later i get this call from Germany saying Who in the hell was that girl? Man she was good looking! Tell her to send me some pictures and write to me.Janie Wilbanks, the girl that Elvis met at the Memphis train station when the troop train passed through

The above is from my original posting, and below is a new one (from ebay) from about the same time- at the Memphis fuel stop, although its not possible to ident any of the girls as being Janie Wilbanks?as described above. I like the look of the disbelief in the two G.I.'s looking out the window.

just for clarifaction sake, the ship that took Elvis to Germany was not the USS Randall, it was the USS General George M. Randall. The USS Randall was decommissioned in 1956
