I'm certain it was published in Shaver's The Life of Elvis Presley (1979), and I've seen it in color, just cannot recall where. I'll try to pin it down.

Also, I'm pretty sure these are the correct views for these images:

I just found these incredible photos here:

These are real photographs from the San Francisco evening show, aren´t they?

So what we have here are the first ever onstage photos from Oakland, October 27, 1957.

Cool! Too bad they weren't a liitl bigger.

When I was a child I was a dreamer,
I read comic books and I was the hero of the comic book
And I saw movies and I was the hero in the movie
So every dream I´ve ever dreamed has come true a hundred times.

From what I've seen, in October 1957 there were almost no sound systems like we appreciate today. Using the Civic Center example above, the music was heard via Scotty and Bill's guitar amplifiers, and the PA system (voices). Some venues might have added a mic or two near the drums, but also running through the house PA system.

It's hard to say. Seeing a rock concert 53 years ago was a new and different experience. At an Elvis concert, the loudest sound in the building had to be the girls screaming.

The closest example we have is the amazing recording from Honolulu in 1961. The sound systems hadn't changed all that much in three and a half years, and the screaming is almost non-stop, but the show is very listenable regardless.

Check out that look that Elvis is giving his mother! I've seen this picture before and noticed that he shot this interesting glare at Gladys while kissing that girl. Then that boy and girl next to Gladys are looking at her too. I wonder what was going on.

Elvis in 1957 must surely have been the peak of his live career. One can only dream of a decent quality recording surfacing.

Hi David!

Great find! Even in those semi-distorted images, the excitement is palpable.
Why, oh why, were these shows (apparently) not recorded?

The dozen listed songs are a delight, but it should be noted:

1 - Of the two missing numbers, one is most likely "Treat Me Nice" and the other possibly "Too Much" or "Blue Suede Shoes"
2 - "Mean Woman Blues" was done on 9-27-1957 in Tupelo, and "Loving You" was still in theaters, so it is not a major surprise in SF
3 - The tunes are not in chronological order: "Hound Dog" always closed the set, it would not be #7 and "Mean Woman Blues" also fell later in the set, it was a show-stopper

Rockin' and awesome update, man!

1. Agreed about "Treat Me Nice" as being one of the missing songs on the list - Alan Hanson mention's that title in his book 'Elvis 57' from that performance.
2. "Mean Woman Blues" Would he have done this live, with the moves from the movie, on stage?
3. Yes, the list must have been written out, after the concert, as like you mentioned the songs don't appear to be in the correct order and are missing two.

Thanks. Regarding "Mean Woman Blues" my suspicion is ... yes.

Cool article, Hopper clearly went to the first L.A. show, on 10-28-1957.

Do you have the missing paragraph?

Thanks for this new information, it just makes you wish even more you could've been at one of these shows. Possibly the best concerts of his life.
