It seems that Elvis´ relationship with Cher was much more complex than we have been led to believe.

Sonny and Cher were super-popular in the '70s, and after their break-up Cher was a very much in-the-spotlight singer and entertainer. Elvis' marriage dissolved around the same time, and he was a very much in-the-spotlight singer and entertainer.
