Why this forum still doesn't have an history section I'll never fathom out.....threads like these need preserving.

Davide...thank you once again for your time and effort.... I must say this thread is my favourite so far.

I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

Amazing photos!

And they beg a question:

The musicians are mic-ed, Elvis himself uses two different mics, which seems a lot of trouble to go to, and yet there is NO AUDIO from this, at all?

These pics have led to the belief that there was a 'third sit-down show'.

So, was it just a run-through for cameras & lighting, or did they also record the audio ?

Your suspicions are justified..................

Thanks for all the comments and extra photo's -

Regarding the fact of the lack of video/audio recording,my experience of working in the TV industry over the last twenty years is that hardly any 'dress runs'
are recorded. This may seem surprising, and is partially down to financial reasons(the cost of tapes and a VT op) and usually the lack of an audience means the footage is difficult to use in the main master. Elvis was obviously not dressed in his leather gear, his hair is not done etc ,so even more of a reason(sadly)not waste VT tape.

Thanks Davide

Regardless of what some of the so called 'experts' say, Elvis is doing more here than just posing for a few publicity stills.

Like many things in the Elvis world, just because they were not captured on audio or film, it doesn't mean they didn't happen. It has also been proven that the recollections of people that were actually present at events when they happened cannot always be relied upon as fact.

Anyone familiar with TV production knows that camera, light and microphone rehearsals are crucial, especially if the segment to be taped is considered "informal." Recording the rehearsal was the least of their concerns prior to the 6:00 PM performance.

Engineer Bones Howe told me himself that his only concern, in the short, late-afternoon window he had, was to make sure that the stage audio was well-balanced. In addition, he would not have the luxury of a stereo sound picture to utilize because RCA refused to apply enough money to the budget to fulfill the request.

Yes, thank you, David. I meant to thank you straight off before addressing the audio issue.

I was wondering, at the least, if someone snuck in a tape recorder somewhere. I'm still wondering that. But the tone of your post is probably correct -- i.e. nothing was taped, at all.

So sad that RCA wouldn't cough up enough money to tape any of the full show in stereo. And didn't you say it wasn't even fresh video tape that NBC used?

Some of NBC's videotape stock might not have been recycled.

I've got that footage!!!!!!!

Oh. Wait. That was Loving You.

Never mind.

Still, it'd be nice to discover videotape of this session one day, though it's supremely unlikely that any was shot. What seems a lot MORE within the realm of possibility is that the proceedings were recorded on audiotape, and not on a snuck-in recorder (unlikely, anyway), if only for the engineer to check quality. It'd have seemed a good idea but, then again, so would having made soundboard recordings of the 1961 charity shows, 7/31/69, and quite a bit of other rather significant stuff that surely seemed at least halfway worthy of note at the actual time. Sure, magnetic tape didn't exactly grow on trees but, really, when you're dealing with Elvis Presley you most certainly should be able to absorb the cost of a little bit of tape. Nothing I couldn't fix if only I had a time machine, sadly a possibility more likely than finding even audio recordings of this rehearsal, if any were made (and if they weren't promptly taped over that evening).
