Re: The Midnight Special 1973 Appreciation Topic
This episode was the final Bobby Darin Tv appearance to air. He was very ill at this point, and struggling to complete his own TV series. This episode was recorded a few days prior to the final episode of The Bobby Darin Show, and it shows just how good his own TV series could have been if he had dispensed with the watered-down big band, the bland cover songs, and surrounded himself with his four core musicians (as he had also done during his residency on the Mike Douglas Show in 1970). Even so, he's clearly struggling during Carpenter here, seemingly holding on to the piano to steady himself at one point, but when he sits down and starts to play piano himself, the years fall away and he gives one of the best TV performances of his life. If only he'd shown some of that during his lacklustre Motown years, too. Incidentally, the inclusion of Dream Lover is a bit of an oddity. He wasn't known to have sung it live since around 1963, and didn't sing it on his own series, so how and why it appeared on this occasion is something of a mystery.TCB-FAN wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 3:43 amHosted by Paul Anka with special guest appearances by Bobby Darin, The Coasters, Tammy Wynette, The Ace Trucking Company, The Edwin Hawkins Singers, The Doobie Brothers, George Jones, and Wolfman Jack.

Not too shabby considering this was one of Bobby's final performances. He left us way too soon, RIP.pmp wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 5:48 amThis episode was the final Bobby Darin Tv appearance to air.
