The BUDDY HOLLY ICON Cover Versions Only Appreciation Topic

Post by Walter Hale 4 »

Hey my Friends,

Charles Hardin Holley (Buddy) was and still is every inch as influential as his fellow 50's icons Elvis and Chuck Berry.

What this thread is going to reflect on , are a variety of musicians and artists including foreign ones, who has covered his songs since the 60's (my fave era AYE :D ) and more recent ones also :smt023

Without any ado, here are two ladies and one band and their unique renditions :smt007

Francoise HARDY. That'll be The Day (1968)...

Linda Ronstadt. That'll be the Day (1976)

BLONDIE - I'm Gonna Love You, Too (1978)

two interesting versions on "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" by Paul Anka, who wrote the song.

What makes these fascinating is Paul has very wisely done them in differing arrangements.

It's good to find a more recent cover, that demonstrates the song's enduring quality....

next will be "Lonesome Tears" by Carolyn Hester, released in 1964 , an unusual choice as the song was perhaps lesser-known Holly record. Buddy had the song released on the Crickets "It's so Easy" 45 B-side in 1958.

Bo Diddley. Not Fade Away (1976)

what a fascinating cycle this was as Buddy recorded "Bo Diddley" in 1956, released posthumously in 1963.
Then Buddy wrote and recorded "Not Fade Away" which was a virtual copy on "Bo Diddley". Bo would, some years later return that respect in 1976 with his reworked cover of Not fade Away :D

Here are three other notable covers:
