I believe the knowledge of the bodyguard book motivated Elvis to "get in shape" in September/October 1976. For him, that meant crash dieting and handfuls of amphetamines and God knows what else.

The loss of so much weight in such a short period leaves him looking terribly unhealthy. Despite his thinner look, his health took a huge step down at this time.
