Re: place and date please
Your 1957 example photo was on the S.S. Matsonia -- not a military ship -- en route to Pier 10 in Honolulu by Saturday morning, November 9th. Taken at some point between November 6-8.
Your "new" 1957 fan candid is interesting.
Educated opinion coming into play here based on what we see:
- matches Elvis' look on his October 26-29 California tour (SF, Oakland and LA)
- looks very much like a hotel and media people
- stayed at the Mark Hopkins ("a five-room suite") in SF and the Beverly Wilshire in LA
- bodyguard Ken Moore is behind and to his left
- he left Los Angeles for Honolulu on November 5th
So it was taken either in San Francisco or Los Angeles between October 26th and November 4th.
It looks was auctioned from somewhere:

Re: place and date please
Do wish we could find the site where the photo was first uploaded. Would love to nail down the date and place of this photo.

This is a French blog:

Is it yours?
It looks like you've taken several recent photos and posted them on the blog without citing the FECC Forum.
Not very cool.
In the example below you also copy my conjecture for the 1957 photo, again not citing FECC.
Again, not very cool. Don't do that.

end of 1957 OCT OR NOV 57?
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE SPECIAL DECORATIONS, at the top right of the wall, a corner of the LOEWS PALACE November 28, 1957 nothing is sure. I still hesitate because they are all dressed quite lightly. (so it wasn't cold). Maybe September written on the photo is good?

Where did you find the larger copy of the photo? That might help us.
It helped me notice the SEP 1957 marking on the right border. That's a little surprising. If it's not a fabrication, we've got to push the date back.
We know Presley's month began by finishing a tour and a Los Angeles recording session, then returning to Memphis by September 12th. The singer would remain in town for the rest of the month.
Could Elvis be in one of the majestic movie houses in downtown Memphis? Sure.
If we can match the interior design we see in the photo to one of them, then we have our likely place and approximate date.

Portland, September 2nd. At the back, looks like the same guy that is right behind Elvis in the new photo. Was he part of the Presley organization, or someone from Portland?

Re: place and date please
Wow, nice post The fool!
I haven't seen that photo since the 1985 Ger Rijff book Long Lonely Highway.
It's the same guy. He's even wearing the same jacket!
I cannot find a name for him, but don't believe he's a buddy of the singer like Tommy Young and Louis Harris, who are standing behind Elvis in your photo share.
I'll wager this fellow is additional security, added to the Presley group for this tour. And this is why.
Presley brought pals and a cousin with him on the tour: George Klein, Lamar Fike, Tommy Young, Louis Harris and Gene Smith. But maybe security chief Ken Moore decided that they weren't experienced in real security work. And added more manpower.
Check this out.
Below is a photo from the day before, a press conference in Seattle. It not only shows the same guy in the same jacket, but that he's really tall. We'd remember a guy like that.
Plus the man to the left of Gene Smith. Is he part of the Presley security team? Why else would he be standing up there?

In our topic photo I feel certain that's him next to Ken Moore. He's touching Elvis' back, perhaps to alert him to something.
Further, Portland news noticed the number of fellows protecting Presley. That's unusual. Also interesting to learn that Presley partied until 5am after the Portland show, and stayed at the Multnomah until the next afternoon.
Pals 'Protect' Elvis in Spokane
SPOKANE, Aug. 30. (AP) - Six companions ran tight interference for Elvis Presley when he arrived here Thursday night by train.
The football formation was hardly needed since only about 20 of the rock 'n' roll singer's fans showed up at the station.
"Are you ready for tomorrow night's show at the stadium?" a reporter shouted.
"Ready Teddy," replied Presley in passing.
The singer is on a Pacific Northwest tour.
More than 1000 persons showed up at the railroad station in Havre, Mont., to greet their idol and broke into boos when Presley did not make an appearance from the train.

Elvis Eats Burnt Bacon
Elvis Presley eluded a teenage contingent waiting all day in the lobby of the Multnomah hotel Tuesday by spending some time in the manner of any ordinary mortal -- sleeping.
Although his chief security officer and others expected the entertainer to leave Portland via chartered bus at midnight Monday, Elvis, apparently exhausted from his stadium ordeal, stayed over in his governor's suite and left without fanfare on the San Francisco-bound Cascade at 4:45 p. m.
According to Bob Dupar, resident manager of the hotel, Presley visited with friends and members of his troupe in the suite until 5 a. m. Tuesday before retiring. That was the last any outsiders saw of the rock 'n' roll singer until 2:30 p. m. Tuesday.
AT THAT time Clovis Soubrand, executive chef at the hotel, received a breakfast order from "Mr. Elvis." It read: Fresh orange juice, 12 slices of very crisp bacon, two eggs fried with the yokes broken and cooked hard, four cups of coffee, two orders of toast and milk.
Soubrand reported today that Elvis was "very pleased with the breakfast, especially the burnt bacon."
For the few fans who did catch his departure from the lobby, Presley posed for photographs, signed autographs and caused one girl to swoon when he kissed her.
At Union station he used his Monday route at the north end of the station again to avoid teenagers idling in the waiting room.

As for location I found a vintage image from the Multnomah Hotel seems to show the same kind of door framing we see in the Presley candid.
Thus, I feel confident the photo should be identified as follows, unless more information pops up:
At the historic Multnomah Hotel, 319 SW Pine Street in Portland - Monday, September 2, 1957
Outside his governor's suite with fans and security, including Ken Moore and (maybe) two other bodyguards.

Nice addition!
It's from the same time frame as the photo we thoroughly investigated here:
At the historic Multnomah Hotel, 319 SW Pine Street in Portland - Monday, September 2, 1957
In both photos Elvis is right by the hotel elevator, which has the letters "H" and "M" intertwined on the doors.
Your copy is reversed, this is the correct view:

Re: place and date please
Think you're mistaking Bobby "Red" West for the back of security lead man Ken Moore's head in the newly-added photo.
West was not a part of this tour.
