Welcome to Oakland --> June '56 !

Post by drjohncarpenter »

Just ran across the site of retired Oakland Tribune photographer Ron Riesterer. He was with the paper from 1956 to 2006, fifty years!

His portfolio of photographs is really something, and worth a look:

But best of all is he captured shots of Elvis when the singer played Oakland in 1956. His site has a few, and they are below.

Thank you for the pictures. Does somebody know if there were two shows in Oakland during that day, is seems that Elvis wore two different jackets ?

You've never walked in that man's shoes or seen things through his eyes
Or stood and watched with helpless hands while the heart inside you dies
So help your brother along the road no matter where you start
For the God that made you, made them too, these men with broken hearts

There was an afternoon and an evening performance in Oakland in 1956.

Below is an ad from the Oakland Tribune a couple of days before the shows, courtesy of:

The building is now called the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center:

It hosted concerts long after Elvis. I've seen the Foo Fighters on the same stage. Cyndi Lauper too.

The microphone you see in Elvis' hand was still in their archives about ten years ago, when I worked on a museum exhibit about Presley, and I got to hold the same mic. That was really neat.
