Winston, from Frankie and Johnny, I think.

Elvis Presley was an explorer of vast new landscapes of dream and illusion. He was a man who refused to be told that the best of his dreams would not come true, who refused to be defined by anyone else's perceptions. This is the goal of democracy, the journey on which every American hero sets out. That Elvis made so much of the journey on his own is reason enough to remember him with the honor and love we reserve for the bravest among us. Such men made the only maps we can trust.

Right, one of the outdoor waiter scenes. The tie threw me off.

Viva las Vegas, the only Elvia movie which takes place in the 20th Century where he does NOT wear a watch, on screen and off screen. I am totally unable to figure why this was so.

Would that be the production on which Parker claimed the studio should pay Elvis because he was wearing his own watch, not one from Property? Can't remember how it was resolved: Did Elvis just take off his watch?

You have nailed it. I now remember that there was discussion in the summer of 1963, from Parker's side, that Elvis should not wear anything which was not provided by the producers.

There had been precedents. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, (referenced 6538, 37mm, one of a dozen, that featured a black gilt dial with a screw back case and a big crown in stainless steel), had been the one he used in FIA after it had been gifted to him by Paramount for its use in GGG. It went for $567,000 at a 2019 auction.

That was the case also of an exact replica of the Hamilton Ventura which Elvis used in BH, also a Paramount film. They gifted it to him, the replica, which can be seen at Graceland. The original was sold by Paramount to SWATCH, for US$1m sometime in the mid 80's. By that time SWATCH had purchased Hamilton, etc. I saw it at Spain's high end store El Corte Ingles, when the watch was on tour. It is now at the SWATCH Museum in Switzerland, along with the US1.8m Omega by Tiffany's Elvis exchanged for another Hamilton, which is now in Graceland. Swatch also owns Breguet, Hamilton, Harry Winston, Longines, Omega, Rado, and Tissot, amongst many others.

Going back to the VLV film, Elvis had used his own watches in previous MGM movies, like the 1958 Omega Constellation (which has sold at auction three times, for a total of US$125,000), in IHATWF, but when the director of VLV became a pain in the neck prior to the shoot of the swimming pool scene at the Flamingo (he demanding body double Lance Le Gault landing on his back into the pool from a three meter board while simultaneously holding Elvis' actual early 60's Gibson LG1 Flat top acoustic, and not a prop, as Elvis asked, something which Lance did, marvelously, in one take, Parker demanded that all apparel, be provided by them, and they agreed, I suppose, except for the wristwatch. Or it could have been the other way around, Parker asking for the watch, then the director having his revenge.
::: Check Le Gault's fantastic landing while holding the Gibson LG1 Flat top in his right arm. It was done in one take.

The guitar survived and was last seen as being played by Michelle Carey in LALLAL. albeit now painted mustard as seen earlier in the pool scene at Spinout.

And Elvis giving the guitar a try, off camera, while Michelle gets the right make up on her feet.

To go even further, it's on location at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, mid-July 1963.

"Viva Las Vegas" released in May 1964.

This was during the making of Blue Hawaii. Elvis had a clause in his contract with Hal Wallis stating that he would be paid a fee of $10,000 if his own wardrobe was used in any scene. Tom Parker is said to have stopped filming, but I doubt that very much. And Elvis simply removed his watch, as you've said.

I just noticed another poster mentioned that this started in Blue Hawaii, but you and I were talking about the absence of an Elvis worn watch, on screen or off screen, but STRICTLY in relation to Viva Las Vegas, which Wallis had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with.

I had no idea which movie, and barely remember having read about some sort of dispute over Elvis wearing his own watch.

What really astonishes me is that so many of you noticed which watch he was wearing or whether he had one on at all, while I was engrossed by his expressions and motions, and listening to his beautiful voice, which was beautiful whether he sang some toss-away or a song that was surpassingly good. His watch? Gosh, guys! Simply not on my radar! :P

I fully understand people wondering why other posters would pay attention to the watches he wore, especially as this is a thread about a photo thought to have been from the movie Fun in Acapulco. My Facebook album of the 40 most incredible wrist watches to have ever been associated with Elvis, and the life they each had, and have and will continue to have, on their own, is the right place to go, not here.

Well, I blew that comment! What I intended to convey is my awe at the array of tiny details FECC's whizzes can assemble to place and date a photo. I recall one response, by Davide, I think, that began, "We know that he took the 5:18 from LA...." I thought, I don't! I don't even know how to read a train schedule! And I have no idea when he left anywhere, let alone all the stops his train made, and where and when he got off. You folks often identify photos based on the rings on his hand, or his necklaces. By "not on my radar" I meant to indicate, quite humbly, I assure you, that I can barely see most of his jewelry, let alone distinguish one ring from another. Hats off to all who are so dedicated and so alert: We owe hundreds of identifications to your sharp eyes, your attention to detail, and your determination to assemble facts and produce a reasoned identification, not just a guess. Bravo, one and all!

And Jaime, I wish you'd make a thread here of your watch collection. I'd love to see them all!

To be honest, the one who set the standard for sleuthing Elvis photos was the late bripet56. He freely shared what he knew and how he figured out dates, places and times in Elvis photos from throughout the singer's life and career.

I'm just so sorry we lost him so soon. He was a great fan.

Alas, Jaime, I'm not a Facebook user, so I will continue to miss out on your collection of photos and info. Many thanks for what you've posted here.

I have a soft spot for Hamiltons -- My Dad gave me my first watch, a Hamilton with a simulated alligator watchband, that I loved. Wondered what happened to the brand name; they were excellent watches. Thanks for the update!

OK, there are five Hamiltons in my FACEBOOK album. The brand was purchased by Swatch in 1988, but they are still being made, and they even have an Elvis Hamilton signature collection. More of that at the end. .

But, first the ones he had AFTER the FIRST Hamilton about which I sent you the info earlier.

SECOND HAMILTON AND FIRST VENTURA. This one he purchased in 1960.

Duchess' palace: cozy little country place...golly!

Those Venturas are gorgeous! You've put together a great piece of research. Well done! And thanks for sharing here.

You're most welcome, for your information, my Facebook album has the life and times of the following watches or timepieces produced by brands which either Elvis was gifted with, preferred for himself, was asked to wear, or gave as gifts.

7 Mattey-Tissot
6 Baume & Mercier
5 Hamilton, 4 of which Ventura
5 Bulova
4 Lord Elgin
4 Omega, 1 of which Constellation, another by Tiffany and Co.
3 Rolex, 2 of which Oyster Perpetual Submariner, 1 Midas
3 Longines
2 Geneva

The foillowing brands are represented by one item, and they are Piaget, Lucian Piccard, Corum, EBEL, Angelus, Regis, Timex (asked to wear by sponsors of the Sinatra special) , Destino, Waltham (pocket watch), D Jaeger-LeCoutre.Atmos (office timepiece), and Franklyn Mint (Elvis styled ladies watch auctioned for charity by the Estate of the Duchess of Devonshire).

Finally, let me add that the most whoch has been paid for the watches, at auctions, this century, are

i) the Omega by Tiffany, at US$1.8m,
ii) one of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submarters at US$567,000 and
iii) the EBEL at US$500,000.

Last century, the Hamilton Ventura worn in Blue Hawaii fetched the most, a private transaction between the seller, Paramount and the buyer, Swatch, to the tune of US$1m.
