I've not seen this 3-24-1958 (Mon) clip before, but the footage has been out there for a while. It's transcribed in 1999's Elvis Word For Word by Jerry Osborne:

990801_Elvis Word For Word p91.jpg

I wonder, though, if this footage is actually not from Fort Chaffee, but Fisher's Steak House. It looks like a restaurant, and I see no military personnel around. As this news report explains, Elvis' bus stopped off at Fisher's Steak House in West Little Rock for a thirty-minute rest stop before completing the six-hour trip to Fort Chaffee. This would explain the "late" comment from Elvis. Note the report is slightly incorrect, Elvis was actually fed a bite of chocolate cake.

New to me, too. Great find !

I've a feeling I've heard the audio before, which is probably the source for Jerry Osborne's book - as opposed to 'footage'.

Um, no. If you take a look at the scan I kindly shared, the entry shows:

Source: "Elvis' Life Story" (VHS).

It's a good bet Osborne's transcription comes from 'footage' on that VHS release. :smt023

Thanks again for the extra info in your replies.

Does that VHS-tape with that title exist? Can't find it anywhere when using different search engines on the net (which doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course).

I know he stated it exactly as you said:

https://books.google.nl/books?id=EEbR2VKQ8QwC&pg=PA91&lpg=PA91&dq=%22Elvis'+Life+Story%22+(VHS).&source=bl&ots=gq-t4cPtqy&sig=u6H57FUMQ4-7hF5yTcxlvHiIpx0&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj-3I-JjprLAhXDJZoKHUUxCCMQ6AEILjAB#v=onepage&q=%22Elvis'%20Life%20Story%22%20(VHS).&f=false

Does anyone know this VHS and its content? Perhaps there's more unseen footage on it...

You probably have! It can be found on Let's Take It On Home (Red Mill 74863 678899 5) released in 1999, and The Complete Word For Word (Elvis Unlimited - EUP 2001-05/1) released in 2002.

Love that record.

Your ears are better than your eyes. Yes, I heard what is said by the man with the mic, my suggestion was made because it sounds a lot better to say "reporting from Fort Chaffee" than something like "reporting from Fisher's Steak House." If you ever worked in the media, you would understand that.

Also, although you make no mention of it, I'm certain you've never heard about this stopover before, have you? You're welcome. :smt023

When you we take a look at the pics in the book "Elvis: like any other soldier" by Jerry Osborne than it looks like Fisher's Steak House on March 24, 1958:

So the interviewer was Jim Kell, a local reporter.

First time seeing this interview also. It's funny that it seems like Elvis wanted to talk more and the reporter had nothing more to ask him.

It's gone very quiet from the Washington Street direction. :D

Incidentally, Elvis is so 'cool', even in this very brief interview - no wonder we're still fascinated, 58 and 39 years later.
