At first I thought Ted Hilgenstuhler's article used press conference quotes to look like an "interview," but some of the comments make clear he really did speak with Elvis, probably at Fort Hood just before Presley went home in June 1958 for his furlough and Nashville session date.

For example, Elvis recalls his sparsely-attended New Orleans debut followed by a Shreveport gig, which fits exactly with his two shows in the Big Easy on 2-04-1955 (Friday) followed by his date in Shreveport on 2-05-1955 (Saturday "Hayride" radio slot).

One line in Hilgenstuhler's piece really stands out: "The number one problem that Elvis faces in the service is the fact that he is alone."

This was very true, on many levels. And, within weeks, his mom would pass away and he would be shipped to Germany. It was a traumatic series of events from which one can say he never really recovered.

Finally, are some of those "King Creole" PR shots previously-unknown?

Thanks, as always, The fool.
