I'm torn over this one. It's certainly more affordable than last years super deluxe box of 'The Cutting Edge' but whether I need 36 CD's of live '66 Bob in varying sound quality with very similar track listing (not that they ought to be radically different every night!) or whether it's just my FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) coming to the fore, I just can't tell yet.
Not that it's ever stopped me buying countless FTD Elvis soundboards...

Re: Bob Dylan. Just when you thought you had everything...
It's currently priced at just over £100. Last year Sony wanted just short of £100 for the 6 disc version of The Cutting Edge, so I think that getting six times as many discs for a similar price - regardless of duplication - is officially, "A Bargain." Obviously, anyone who isn't already a Dylan fan is going to be well advised to steer clear, but for the rest of us it's time to get ordering.
It goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway, that had this been Elvis then the price would have been through the roof.

I've pre-ordered at the Amazon price of £104.86, I can always cancel if it comes to it but at least that price is locked in - I've got the Stones in Mono on pre-order due Friday. Crikey, I need a second job! Or just skip Christmas...

The Stones box, which I didn't pre-order, is currently priced at £514.35. No idea what is going on there. When In Rome wrote:I know, I know... Who am I trying to kid?The Pirate wrote:It's currently priced at just over £100.

I just pre ordered it from Amazon UK. For whatever reason the US doesn't have a price or ordering information yet.

I pre-ordered the stones box a few months ago, now they are saying it is currently unavailable. I'm hoping they've just sold their initial pre-order stock intake and are awaiting more? The Pirate wrote:The Stones box, which I didn't pre-order, is currently priced at £514.35. The £500 version appears to be a Japanese import. I'm sorry but I wouldn't pay that much for ol' Mick and co...

There's a suggestion that this is a "copyright extension" box. In the UK, these recordings would be up for grabs next year if Sony didn't release them now. In the USA, with different laws in force, the copyright does not need protecting so in effect there's no need to make the box available. For the last two or three years Sony have done similar boxes, but not made them widely available. One was download only, one was vinyl only, and another was a CD set sent out without fanfare in very limited quantities. So releasing this one in the UK only would not be out of the question.BobDylan wrote:I just pre ordered it from Amazon UK. For whatever reason the US doesn't have a price or ordering information yet.
It may have nothing to do with that and it might be being listed on Amazon.com even as I type this, but what I've suggested is a possibility.

Re: Bob Dylan. Just when you thought you had everything...
Oddly enough, it is currently unavailable on Amazon UK. Once again I wonder have they sold out of their pre-order allocation? Like the Stones in mono box released this Friday that is also currently unavailable before release and previous issues with the availability of 'Way Down in the Jungle Room' CD once released, I do wonder if something has changed with Amazons stock allocation?

Availability via Amazon UK has been on and off like a bride's nightie over the last 24 hours. All I can think is that they've had to keep going back to Sony to agree more stock, which implies that this is definitely a limited release. Otherwise, they'd just keep taking orders, wouldn't they?

I've yet to finish listening to all 18 discs of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965–1966, and I've only played the Genuine Live 1966 bootleg box of 8 CDs (+ 2 CD bonus) twice through in 16 years. I'm kind of on the fence about getting 36 CDs, despite knowing how tremendous the music may be.The Pirate wrote:Availability via Amazon UK has been on and off like a bride's nightie over the last 24 hours. Re: Bob Dylan. Just when you thought you had everything...
I think I read that there 19 versions of most songs on there, but I haven't counted them myself. Fans are justifying it by talking about "subtle variations" in each one, and so on. We may be familiar with that argument here on FECC. For me, it comes down to the fact that if I'm going to pay £100 for a Dylan box set anyway, (as I have several times before), then it may as well contain all 36 discs and be complete if that's what is on offer. It's like the FTD Classic Albums, where given the choice between a single or a double live collection for the same price, you'll opt for the latter. Even though you already have the second show in the same sound quality. In Dylan's case it's even better, it's 36 discs against 6, and I've got hardly any of of it.drjohncarpenter wrote: I've yet to finish listening to all 18 discs of The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965–1966, and I've only played the Genuine Live 1966 bootleg box of 8 CDs (+ 2 CD bonus) twice through in 16 years. I asked my son if he thought he could manage to work his way through three dozen CDs, and he looked at me with a look of genuine pity because I'd even thought it was necessary to ask. Of course, he's not paying for it.

Really? I think this is going to be going the same way that the Stones Mono box is, where orders won't be fulfilled. Amazon have stopped even listing it in the UK, they were marking it as "Unavailable" but now it's like it never even existed.Mike C wrote:Looks interesting. That isn't correct. The copyright on recordings after 1962 is 70 years not 50 years. The Pirate wrote:There's a suggestion that this is a "copyright extension" box. What seems incredible is that such a release is viable at retail, particularly as it is made up mostly of soundboards with even audience recordings thrown in.

It’s worth noting that this set is partially a copyright release: officially releasing these tracks before 50 years has passed allows Sony to retain copyright in the EU.

A release to preserve the UK copyrights on these 1966 recordings, since copyrights on unreleased material still expire after 50 years.
David B says:

No they don’t. It’s 50 years until 1962. From 1963 onwards its 75 years .. so this release is nothing to do with they being 50 years old ..
Caroline says:

The 75 year rule applies to released recordings, anything unreleased still falls into the 50 year bracket. Dylan did a multi-LP set in a tiny quantity a couple of years back for the same reason. They’ve obviously decided this is worth a wider release.

Re: Bob Dylan. Just when you thought you had everything...
I pre-ordered from Amazon not long after it was announced, delivered for £99. At first I was unsure and pre-ordered to lock in a favourable price just in case but then I had a listen to Live '66 and since I had no bootlegs/ imports covering this material I decided it would make a lovely Christmas present for me. Firstly though, I had to convince my wife it would be a lovely Christmas present for me and that £100 isn't really that much of a crazy price for 36 CD's with the same songs over and over...Mike C wrote:When In Rome wrote:Merry Christmas me!
