Post by Walter Hale 4 »

Seeing that Bob and SONY Music are allowing more of his sixties records featured over on Youtube and obviously his status as ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS MUSIC ICONS, this is a topic highlighting his best and rare songs plus stand out album tracks housed here.

hows this.... for starters -

..

"I was so much older then/I'm younger than that now."

Fantastic wordplay and sheer timeless. But the tune is mostly associated by the Byrds' covered version of which their record would peak at #30 on
the Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on April 30th, 1967.

Dylan is my favorite artist. Actually, calling him an artist doesn't really cover it.

Musician, writer, poet, painter...

Which version do you like ?

From 'Nashville Skyline'. Album turns 50 in April.

..

Bob also waxed the song in 1962 and featured on his 'Freewheelin' album -
..

Me, I give a slight edge to the 1962 cut.

Quote Swingin' Pig - "This is the first ever live performance of Dylan's Western masterpiece, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," which was written in 1973 for the film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid." This was recorded on January 4, 1974 at the Chicago Stadium in Chicago, IL by an audience member with a very expensive piece of stereo recording equipment. Dylan's band is on point, and so is his voice. I ripped this rare track off of one of the bootleg cassette tapes I've collected over the years. More Dylan rarities to come. Enjoy this gem while you can!"

Bobster's tribute to Rick Nelson. He did this at a number of his concerts during the 1986 world tour. Also features Tom Petty and the heartbreakers.

Next is from the Sydney concert. LOL he's unusually talkative after playing the song here:

Like A Rolling Stone (LIVE IN GLASGOW - May 19, 1966) [FUNNY AUDIENCE INTERACTIONS]

Swingin' pig says this is a ripping version of Dylan's masterpiece. The performance isn't perfect as Dylan's voice cuts out in a couple spots, most notable at the second verse. However, his voice is in fine form here for 1966; he screams quite well.
What especially unique in this performance is the end of the song, in which he repeats the last line of the chorus, then sings the entire chorus again. I'm not sure how many times he did that, but I enjoyed the spontaneity.

This track is also a great look into how hostile the crowds were during his 1966 world tour. "Bob Dylan is backstage, he got very sick. I am here to take his place."

As always, enjoy this gem while you can, and please stay safe!

Quote Swingin' Pig - This is most of the famed tapes recorded at the home of Eve and Mac McKenzie between 1961 and 1962, although there is debate on whether these sessions spilled into '63. For years, there was a bootleg tape in circulation of the complete sessions. Unfortunately, the quality of these recordings was horrendous. Even for a bootleg collector like me, the tracks were mostly unlistenable. It wasn't until I acquired "The 50th Anniversary Collection - 1962" that I discovered that another version of the tape existed. Some of the tracks recorded were studio quality.

It occurred to me that the bootlegs in circulation must've been recordings of the recordings. I don't know the whole story, but it was common that bootleggers would express interest in certain rare tapes for sale, hide tape recorders in their coats while listening to these tapes at the seller's home, then later release the recordings they took there. If you'd like to hear what the original tape sounded like, the second song

Possibilities aside, we're very lucky to have these crystal clear recordings. Enjoy this gem while you can!

Bob Dylan - Barcelona, Spain (June 28th, 1984) (TV3 Broadcast)

These are the four songs from Bob's concert at Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain in 1984 broadcast by the Catalan regional television channel TV3, founded just one year before as the second regional television channel in Spain (the first was Euskal Telebista in Basque Country). The sound and image quality are very good as both were recorded with professional equipment, although the video has unstable edges for having been transferred from a VHS and there are some little cuts in the sound.

The gem here is the recording of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right": this is the only circulating performance of this song in 1984 that we have in soundboard quality. And the version of "Blowin In' The Wind" with Carlos Santana on the guitar and sung by Bob and the public is very good too! Mick Taylor accompanied Bob on guitar throughout the concert, in fact he was part of the 1984 tour band.

Who knows, maybe in the depths of the TV3 archive lays the complete audio and video recording of the concert, and someday it could see the light.

Bob Dylan - Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight (Unreleased Promo Video - Lyrics & Español)

This promo video of "Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight" (song included in the album "Infidels" from 1983) never was officially released, most likely because in the end the released take of the song was another. The video has commonly circulated with a low quality audio track, here it was replaced by a better version. NOTE: The image defects are of origin, possibly product of a bad transfer to VHS from where this video was ripped or for beign a copy of many generations. The original color in the video was so pale and it was adjusted to look better.

In the video we can see Bob singing and jamming with Mark Knopfler, Mick Taylor, Alan Clark, Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar. Most likely the video was filmed in the same studio where the "Infidels" sessions took place:
Studio A – Power Station at BerkleeNYC, Manhattan.

In this song it is remarkable the verse "You know, it's not even safe no more in the palace of the Pope", which refers to the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in May of 1981.

Dixie (Lyrics & Traducción) [Masked & Anonymous]

Clip from the movie "Masked & Anonymous" (2003) where Bob Dylan performs "Dixie" (also known as "I Wish I Was In Dixie's Land), song composed by Daniel Decatur Emmett in 1859 originally as a minstrel song but which became a symbol of Southern patriotism during Civil War and the Reconstruction. Also it was Abraham Lincoln's favorite song. And, as an extra, a discussion between characters in the movie concerning a guitar that supposedly belonged to Blind Lemon Jefferson.
