David, Thank You so much for participating and sharing your memories/experiences in the whole "E1" project, be4 and afta, on this message board.
It was an honour to be able to "type" to you about a particular question I had and for you to respond in kind. It was all pink icing
I hate to see you go, and I'm sure I'm not only speaking on my behalf, but your always welcome here.
Thanks again David.
PS---I loved the E1 disc and still do...

Re: FINAL INSTALLMENT
David, thanks for helping us revisit "E1" three years later from your
behind the scenes perspective.
One final point:
constant reissue of Elvis' hits on various compilations - even in the
CD era, such as "Elvis' Golden Records" (five volumes), "Elvis-The Number Ones," Elvis: the Top 10 Hits," "Greatest Jukebox hits," "Artist
of the Century" (box and single disc) etc. etc.
(There really are too many to cite!)
So it's not quite right to atttibute E1's relatively more modest
sales compared to the Beatles' sales of "1," as stemming from
the remaining Fab Four still being around in one form or
fashion as solo artists or touring worldwide during since the '60s.
Elvis was arguably over-exposed via hits comps and yet still sold
well with the injection of a good budget, a "hit," and what many
hear would at least concede were the "controversial" new mixes
and song choices as well as a more modern sound that obviously
was welcomed.
The issue of RCA's constant repackaging of Elvis' hits has been
a true thorn for many fans and best addressed here on Peter Franks terrific "Cutting the Catalogue" thread - which lost several pages
during the server problem..!)
That E1 did so well in the light of competition from, well, Elvis himself
(meaning prior hits comps that the Beatles' smartly avoided) is telling
about the King's true total selling power.
Regards and god bless David Bendeth for paying us another visit -and
to fellow FECCers (pro and con- "E1") for joining in the fun.
P.S.
Tomorrow I'll post a cover sleeve picture of Bendeth's rare hit from '79.

I think it's remarkable the E1 did as well as it did in the light of theDavid Bendeth wrote:The truth is/was that it was everything working in Tandem mixed in with the fact that the artist happened to be the biggest artist of all times. We never did beat the Beatles greatest hits in sales. I feel that happened because they were still very live and active for the most part. The Beatles also did worldwide tours, Elvis never played outside of the USA/Canada.

Someone (not Will or David) has forwarded a copy of the ten-minute "making of E1" video / film entitled
"ELV1S: Behind The Mix" made back in 2002.
This link will be good for a few more
days (or a set amount of viewing). Enjoy !

My god that was awesome, you just really wonder why they never produced a TV special focusing on his music alone, and have musicians that worked with him share their stories instead of his confidants or lovers. What a real shame.Gregory Nolan Jr. wrote:Someone (not Will or David) has forwarded a copy of the ten-minute "making of E1" video / film entitled

Thanks for link! I have noticed DJ looking at the tape box that has Hound Dog and the song right after it is My Baby Left Me. And EPA 940 SIDE 2 has Hound Dog and My Baby Left Me in that same order. So can I assume that the Hound Dog "master" came from that compilation reel? And was the original Master of Hound Dog placed in that reel? If not, then original Hound Dog master is somewhere else.thenexte wrote:My god that was awesome, you just really wonder why they never produced a TV special focusing on his music alone, and have musicians that worked with him share their stories instead of his confidants or lovers. Never Assume anything
A few tapes were brought back to the studio after the record was made to shoot this "band" segment a month after the fact.
There were many tapes at the outset, roughly Five full boxes.

Please understand
These musicians were not "hired" to hype this record at any time. They could have had any reaction they wanted too. We spent the day together, over 10 hours. We listened for 4 hours. These tapes had never been seen publicly before and the musicians were not prepped. All I can say is we were nervous and relieved to get their approval on the sound. DJ did not want to leave the studio without a copy of the CD.
Forget about what the hell I think, who cares? This is coming from kids we picked off the street literally and musicians that were there in the studio making this music in the studio with Elvis. When I played The wonder of you they told me it was an outtake...we knew they knew. They understood the predicament. Elvis was not there, however, his chosen people were and that was the next best thing for us.
The day ended at bar, everyone having drinks and telling some of the best stories about Elvis NEVER PRINTED I have ever heard.
Life on the road with Elvis over decades was not boring...trust me!!! Thats when the video camera turned off!! Ok Ill share one..
So DJ Fontana is telling us that he knew things were heating up for Elvis when he went clothes shopping in LA. Somewhere on Melrose avenue.
I guess Elvis was dating some girl back home at the time. DJ walks out the store and see's Elvis in a Caddilac with Ann Margaret, Elvis waves to DJ on the street...And DJ just looked on in in absolute shock and turned to his buddy and said, "This guy is really a star now, we wont be able to talk to him tommorow"!!

That was great to see! Some sort of visual analysis of Elvis' recording career really should be done while those who participated are still around to give their input. I'd rather watch another 3 hours of something similar to that clip than the same old people going over the same old ground.
Great stuff!
