"Shake, Rattle And Roll" multiple/varying lyrics...

#1633794

Post by Jukebox Jam »

~ There's been a lot of speculation for the past several months as to what Ernst Jorgensen will include as bonus material on a
"classic album" FTD version of For LP Fans Only. Other than occasional exceptions, I usually feel that splices or edits are not the best things to include on official releases. However, I honestly feel that one exception in particular would be for Ernst to include a spliced/edited version of "Shake, Rattle And Roll" which would showcase all of the multiple and varying lyrics that Elvis tried during several takes of the song on February 3, 1956 in New York's RCA studio.

A couple of years ago a friend sent me a 4-minute, 2-second spliced & edited version of "Shake, Rattle And Roll" on a CD-R for me to enjoy. It included all of the various lines that Elvis attempted... rolled into one long, cohesive, rockin' song! It sounds great, and I'd like to share with everyone how he laid it out.
(Sorry, I don't know how to actually post the altered recording(s). It might already be on YouTube somewhere, but I'm not aware if it is.)

4:02 - SHAKE, RATTLE And ROLL

0:04
Well, get out of that bed, wash your face and hands
Get out of that bed, wash your face and hands
Well, get in that kitchen, make some noise with the pots and pans

0:18
I believe to my soul you're the Devil in nylon hose
I believe to my soul you're the Devil in nylon hose
'Cause the harder I work the faster my money goes

0:31
Well, I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
Shake, rattle and roll !

0:46 - (Guitar solo)

0:59
Well, you wear those dresses, sun comes shining through
You wear those dresses, sun comes shining through
I can't believe my eyes, all that mess belongs to you

1:13
I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store
I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store
Well, I can look at you, tell you ain't no child no more

1:26
Well, I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
Go!

1:40 - (Piano solo)

1:54
Well, get out in the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans
Get out in the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans
Well, roll my breakfast 'cause I'm a hungry man

2:08
I believe you're doin' me wrong and now I know
I believe you're doin' me wrong and now I know
'Cause the harder I work the faster my money goes

2:21
Well, I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
(slightly off mic) Shake, rattle and roll !

2:35 - (Guitar solo)

2:49
I've been holdin' it in, way down underneath
I been holdin' it in, way down underneath
You make me roll my eyes, and then you make me grit my teeth

3:02
Well, I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
Take it again!

3:17 - (Guitar solo)

3:30
I've been over the hill, way down underneath
I've been over the hill, way down underneath
You make me roll my eyes, and then you make me grit my teeth

3:43
Well, I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone so-u-oul !

~ Over a year earlier (January 19, 1955 in Florence, Alabama at WJOI Radio station) Elvis sang some lyrics that he didn't sing in the studio in '56. That particular live performance of "Shake, Rattle And Roll" is available on Sony Legacy's A BOY FROM TUPELO on disc 3, track 8 . . .

1:13
Well, you never do right to save your doggone soul
Aw, shake me!

1:18 - (Guitar solo)

1:33
Well, you wear those dresses, your hair's done up so nice
You wear those dresses, your hair's done up so nice
Well, you look so warm, but your heart is cold as ice

2:03
I said shake, rattle and roll... I said shake, rattle and roll
'a listen to me now... shake, rattle and roll
Well, you never do nothin' to save your doggone soul
Shake, rattle and blue moon!

Also to mention --
Elvis sang a wild, rockin' medley of "Shake, Rattle And Roll/Flip, Flop And Fly" for his national television debut on
January 28, 1956 in New York, NY. He pulled the following lyrics from "Flip, Flop And Fly" to finish-off the medley . . .

I'm like a Mississippi bullfrog sittin' on a hollow stump
I'm like a Mississippi bullfrog sittin' on a hollow stump
I got so many women, I don't know which way to jump

Well, I said flip, flop and fly... I don't care if I die
I said flip, flop and fly... I don't care if I die
Don't ever leave me, don't ever say goodbye!

The 1955 radio station recordings show that Elvis not only loved the Joe Turner original but also the Bill Haley cover. But the lyrics on the Haley disc were forgotten by the time of the 1956 session at RCA New York.

In my humble opinion,
Elvis' master with the overdubbed vocals (of probably Bill Black and possibly Scotty Moore) is the better of the three versions! :smt020
..

The lyrics in red were omitted from Elvis' master . . .

The #1 r&b hit by Joe Turner and his Blues Kings is fantastic and deeply influential, and the ensuing studio covers by Bill Haley and Presley both very good. Elvis' live version on the January 1956 "Stage Show" appearance is probably the best one we have by him. How stunning is it that he chose, for his national TV debut, two songs from his live show instead of his brand-new RCA single? And that both were #1 r&b hits by Turner and Ray Charles, respectively?

Presley was sending a message, and it was that the world was changing.

I'm guessing that Ernst will include that on the FTD classic album issue of FOR LP FANS ONLY ... along with a couple of studio alternate takes, and possibly the January 19, 1955 live version recorded at WJOI Radio station in Florence, Alabama.

I'm not sure why he would do that.

Obviously to include a live version (with some different lyrics) of a studio-recorded song that
was/is originally included on the FOR LP FANS ONLY album.

That particular classic album is going to need all the help it can get from bonus material
to make it worthwhile for collectors to purchase.

For the song "Shake rattle and roll" the lyrics are censored:

Big Joe Turner recorded the song 15-02-54 and sung about bedroom adventures :
"Get outta that bed and wash your face and hands".

Bill Haley recorded the song in 1954 and sung about adventures in the kitchen:
"Get outta that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans".

Big Joe Turner continues with : "Well you wear low dresses, the sun comes shining through. I can't believe my eyes that all of this belongs to you".

Bill Haly continues with "You wear those dresses, your hair done up so nice". The see - through dress is gone.

Elvis sung about: "I'm like a one-eyed-cat in a seafood store" in the master take. When you listen to the recording of different takes (take 8) from the song the lyrics has changed too.

There are more songs like One night (of sin) that the lyrics were censored.

I always liked the way he slipped into the 'censored' lyrics to One Night when he did it at Burbank in '68. I doubt it was intentional, it was just his memory kicking in. "Now I know, that very quiet life" and "the things I did and I saw" etc.
Even Hound Dog gets a "snoopin' round mah door".

I've often wondered if his memory shooting off ideas made him remember doing Little Mama on the Hayride, and that caused him to introduce That's All Right Mama as That's All Right Little Mama.

I'm pretty sure Bill Haley sang, "Get out in that kitchen"... meaning - Get in the kitchen

Such inclusions would be unique in light of how the previous 1950s "classic albums" have been assembled, which is why I question your suggestion. There's a certain aesthetic that has been followed, and I doubt they'll suddenly break from that.
