"Do The Clam"

Post by Scoobie »

Hmmm. Does anyone else (probaly UK people) find themselves thinking of "Benny Hill" when listening to "Do The Clam"? OR is it just me?

.

On Do The Clam it's Boots Randolph playing Saxophone from 1:40 onwards we hear a resemblance with the theme for The Benny Hill Show where we hear Boots Randolph play Yakety Sax:

Sorry, but this is one of the worst Elvis songs he ever recorded.Boots Randolph played on sax but the song is atrocious.

It may just be you. But sax player Boots Randolph was certainly a talented musician, be it "Yakety Sax" or a crappy Elvis movie song.

Oh, yes. Some claim "Do The Clam was a number one smash for The King in Japan back in '65." :D

And some claim the Rock era began in 1964

The fact remains though that DTC was an international hit, scoring top tens throughout the world and making it to number one in three separate territories. Too bad if "some" can't handle that. :D

The only thing I think about is a good Italian restaurant and a plate of linguine with clam sauce, Yum.

It's really bad. You can always tell when Elvis believed in a number and he certainly didn't believe in "Do the Clam". I wish that he'd demanded better.

I can't see a real connection between the pieces of music apart from the sax bit. Regarding the videos, the only connection is the sand and the girls and one video was quite amusing whilst the other was somewhat.......well I'll let you decide. But Girl Happy as a film has always been a favourite of mine. Do The Clam was okay for a scene in the movie, but should never have been chosen as a single.

He should never have recorded it imo - the song is crapper than crap.

bad, bad choice as a single then and I never play it now. Criminal that it was selected as a single really when they had two delightful ballads in Puppet on A String / Do Not Disturb. I find many of the faster numbers in Girl Happy unconvincing in terms of what Elvis did on them and the adlibs of the "ha , ah ha ha" sound forced and as if he was trying to inject some excitement which before and with better material came naturally. Meanest Girl In Town probably the best of a bad bunch
DTC must have sounded very out of pace though with what else was going on at the time and I think I read they had hopes of it becoming another Twist like dance craze!

Puppet on a String was a lot better than Do the Clam.

It was better as was Cross My Heart, but that was one weak soundtrack. No songs were great and so poorly recorded. Where was the quality control? A soundtrack I never play now and didnt even play much in 1965. It really was time for an overhaul. Fans were getting disgusted by this point. My most played Elvis soundtrack was Spinout due to some decent uptempo material and those bonus songs, but it was back to the crapper again after that.

I can always remember listening to two pirate radio stations in the UK- Radio London and Radio Caroline and both had new record releases for the week. On came Elvis' "Do The Clam" and then The Rolling Stones "The Last Time". It was pretty easy to guess which would be the bigger hit.

Quality control would and should have meant at most an ep release for Girl Happy I feel. My picks would have been

Girl Happy
Puppet On A String
Cross My Heart or Meanest Girl In Town
Do Not Disturb

but of course the demand was for an album and despite all it was still top ten I believe both UK and USA so there must have been a lot of folks who bought it and listened to it once! Certainly one of the easier original records to locate in VG to Mint condition in the UK and probably did not do the rounds of many parties or get stacked on too many Dansette record destroyers . Even with a good condition UK copy the recorded sound and vinyl pressing left an awful lot to be desired. Roustabout and Kissing Cousins soundtracks are positively audiophile in comparison

Depends on my mood and the weather - red for chillier weather. I love them both!

If Elvis recorded longer versions of The Meanest Girl in Town, Startin' Tonight and I've Got to Find My Baby and of course if the title track wasn't speed up it could be a better LP.

Yes those songs had some promise, had some kick to them, but like so many others , they were too short, recorded terribly, and all concerned didnt seem to care to put some thought into them to make them better. Its the worst sounding LP to me, and thats saying something because a lot of them were so poorly recorded and mixed. (Speedway, F&J, Harum)

There were a lot of die hard and loyal fans who bought it - not so many copies bought by the general record buying public though. It's running time and therefore value for money didn't help and probably didn't gather new fans either.
