The Lyrics to I Understand (Just How You Feel).
Written by Pat Best.
I understand just how you feel
Your love for me, why not be mine
It's over now but it was grand
I understand, I understand
If you ever change your mind
Come back to me and you will find
Me waiting here, at your command
I understand, I understand
I miss you so
Please believe me when I tell you
I just can't stand to see you go
You know
If you ever change your mind
Come back to me and you will find
Me waiting here at your command
I understand, I understand
SPOKEN: "I understand just how you feel. Let bygones be bygones.
But always remember I love you, I love you, I love you"
(We'll sip a cup of wine, my dear, for Auld Lang Syne)
I understand
Elvis and his velvet tones made a home recording of I Understand (Just How You Feel) at the home of Eddie Fadal's in Waco, Texas in May 1958.

Cool thread, thank you!
Earlier today I happened to post a related topic:

What a joy this home recording exists and can still be enjoyed
Another one, with Anita Wood. Elvis: "They gotta give her something like Connie Francis sings".

Re: I Understand (Just How You Feel)
The version by the Bell Ringers is recorded around july 1954; the Bell label released a lot of cover versions from other artists hits.

Tony Brent; Donald Peers; Gary Miller;
Enoch Light; Jimmy Young; Sandy Stewart.
When I looked up the Enoch light recording it had Bob Eberly singing a song called I Understand but I don't think it was the same song so I wasn't sure about the other names and decided to not include them.
That's 2 more for 1954.It seems that when a new song came out ,everyone took thier turn with it.

Re: I Understand (Just How You Feel)
This is how it worked back then. And it's interesting that sometimes more than one version would chart. Usually there was a market split at retail, with one going up on the pop chart, the other on the r&b chart. In the case of this ballad, Elvis is drawing from the Four Tunes release.Domino wrote:I seen that recording listed plus a few others.

This unusual demo recording first surfaced here:
Forever Young, Forever Beautiful (Memphis Flash Records JL 92447, 1978)
It appeared with a good deal of hype from its publisher, Paul Lichter. Despite plenty of photos from the period to choose for the cover, Lichter opted for the original "art" you see above. Whatever happened to him?

I first heard these recordings on the Homemade Recordings CD I bought several years ago.It was great to hear an entire CD with all new stuff.Sure wish some more recordings like that would surface.
Thanks for adding the Herman's Hermits.I intended on including it but then I forgot it.MikeFromHolland wrote:.And let's not forget the version by Herman's Hermits as released in December 1964 on this EP:

I suppose the songwriters back then were happy to see their songs giving them royalties from several recordings all in the same year.
The Four Tunes version sounded like the most likely one that inspired Elvis. It's interesting that 4 years later it was still on his mind.I think when Elvis liked a song it followed him around for many years and turned up in the studio,at home or on stage.

True. It's possible that Eddie Fadal had a copy of the single in his collection, too.Domino wrote:drjohncarpenter wrote:This is how it worked back then.
