My Heart Cries For You - A Sing-A-Long Favorite.

Post by Domino »

My Heart Cries For You was written (and adapted from an 18th Century melody) by Carl Sigman and Percy Faith in 1950.
The music from the French song of the 18th Century is attributed to Dauphin of France Queen Marie Antoinette - La jardinière du Roi or translated .......The King's Garden. It was composed by Myron Jacobson.

The King's Garden
Song of Marie Antoinette

- 1 -
It is said that the most beautiful
It's you, it's you
The poor gardener
The king, the king
And when the king looks
Believe me, believe me
He never takes guard
Only you, only you.

- 2 -
At dawn when I water
In my home, my home
With my flowers because I
You, you
Among these flowers so beautiful
Believe me, believe me
I pick the most beautiful
For you, for you.
- 3 - (Not sung here)
Who loves you madly?
It's me, it's me
Who is the prettiest?
It's you, it's you
And one in which I hope
It's you, it's you
The friend sincere
It's me, it's me.

- 4 -
The queen on holidays
For me, for me
It speaks of my sorrows,
You, you
And we will, I hope,
You, me, me, you,
Gardener, garden
The king, the king.

Myron Jacobson

The ballad was recorded in 1950 by Guy Mitchell with Percy Faith & his Orchestra ,sold a million copies and reached #2 on the charts in 1951.
Dinah Shore recorded My Heart Cries For You on November 4, 1950 and had a #3 Pop hit.
Evelyn Knight & Red Foley's version went to #28 on the pop chart and #6 on the country chart around the same time in January 1951.

There were many cover versions through the 1950's,60's & 70's.

Vic Damone's - 1950 - #4
Jimmy Wakely - 1950 - (#12)
Bill Farrell (#18)
Al Morgan (#24)
Ray Charles - a top 40 hit in 1964.
Connie Francis recorded My Heart Cries For You in German called Mein Herz ruft nach dir and another version in French called "Mon cœur pleure pour vous.
Many more covers include Ben E. King, Dinah Washington, Charlie Rich, Dean Martin,Jo Stafford with Gene Autry,Doyle Holly, Keely Smith and The McGuire Sisters.

In 1966 Elvis along with Charlie Hodge & Red West, made a home recording of My Heart Cries For You and was first released on the 1984 - LP set "A Golden Celebration".
These home recording and listening sessions that Elvis and company did were not all in fun. This was a great time for Elvis to figure out where to go next musically .During these sessions they ran through "Fools Rush In,"I Will Be True","Rags To Riches","How Great Thou Art" and "Where No None Stands Alone" .All of which found their way to an album in the next few years.

..

Meanwhile ....in another Country a few years prior to the Elvis home recordings,my Dad (on guitar) and his sisters and brothers-in-laws were home recording this song and others.Pretty sure that's my Mom singing in there too.Maybe the lead part.
I'm pretty sure this is the house they are in and the guy standing by his car wearing the leather jacket ,is my Dad.I don't think my Dad was an Elvis fan in the 50's but being only 2 years younger than Elvis,he definitely had the rebel look and loved his cars.

They fooled around with "Your The Only Star In My Blue Heaven","Cold Cold Heart" and "My Heart Cries For You.Here's the home recording they made of "My Heart Cries For You."

Cool topic. Thanks! So nice to hear your family sing :D

I've always had a soft spot for this 1960 version by Charlie Rich:
