The need to channel "Love me tender" may have caused its not being included. What a pity, as I prefer it to almost all of his 50{s ballads.drjohncarpenter wrote:Interestingly, I recently discovered that Elvis was slated to sing this B-side at CBS-TV in Los Angeles, on 9-09-1956 (Sun). Next to "I Want To Be Free" it showcases some of the best vocals that he had put to tape in the '50's, with "Playing For Keeps" being a close second.

I appreciate the thread for this often over-looked gem. This was my Mom's favorite Elvis song. I too, really like this song a great deal. Elvis voice, to me at least, is so convincing and committed. The arrangement is awesome. It's too bad we didn't have an opportunity to hear this gem live. Thanks

WOW! That would have been a great treat to have heard him perform this one live. Is there any stated or reported reason why Elvis didn't perform this song that evening long ago? As noted above, the push by 20th Century-Fox to include "Love Me Tender" meant that "Any Way You Want Me" (That's How I Will Be)" had to go.rlj4ep wrote:WOW! Re: "Any Way You Want Me" (That's How I Will Be)"
In the autumn of 1963 I bought this as my first Elvis LP. I had started work in the summer and my net weekly pay was about £4.25 of which I gave £3.00 to my mum for board. EGR cost about £1.80, being more than the standard LP because it was on the RCA Red Label and it was gatefold. So, as you can imagine, I had to save up for some time to get this treasure !Dixieland Rocks wrote:
Any Way You Want Me (That's How I Will Be) and I Want You, I Need You , I Love You are two very under appreciated songs in my opinion. When I was growing up (before I was a fan) my mother had The Elvis' Golden Records LP and those two songs hold their own with the rest of the songs on the LP. It just seems they don't get as much notoriety as the others on the album.
I loved it and the UK version was so much better than the USA version as it included 4 Sun tracks, previously unissued in the UK (think I've got my facts straight). I was completely unaware of the provenance of the tracks on the LP, but I regarded the final two - AWYWM and I Want You, etc as the glorious climax to the album.
Any Way You Want Me has an atmosphere you can almost reach out and touch and the opening guitar sounds set the scene magically. The MRS New York Sessions release has the recording on a DVD format, as well as CD, and it sounds brilliant.
Pretty much a doo-wop sound - although doo-wop aficionados would probably disabuse me of such a notion

Re: "Any Way You Want Me (That's How I Will Be)"
Thanks Juan, another top notch recordingJuan Luis wrote: Aaron Schroeder's and Cliff Owens' penned "Any Way You Want Me (That's How I Will be)", was recorded on July 2, 1956 in New York, New York at RCA Studios with Steve Sholes and Elvis Presley producing, and Ernie Oehlrich behind the console. The third track waxed after the rock n' roll classics, "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel" respectively. What a way to cap the New York City sessions!
According to Peter Guralnick; Gordon Stoker of The Jordanaires was not impressed with Elvis Presley as a singer until he recorded "Any Way You Want Me", stating words to the effect of "this guy can really sing"!
In my opinion, this recording shows how vast and fast Elvis Presley was improving his ballad singing, he was already well on his way in becoming one of the greatest ballad singers of all time for this fan.
Elvis communicates and evokes such feeling that makes you want to listen to the words of the song regardless of his diction. Pure emotion came out of his mouth in a way that attracts interest, attention, and almost a need to listen again and again until (speaking for myself), one is hooked, line, and sinker with the record! I feel the recording does not do justice to how Elvis sounded in the studio. We are lucky in my opinion, to get at least some of the "magic" via the recording. It must have been an intense experience (for those present), seeing and hearing him sing live in the studio while wringing out every ounce of emotion, take- after-take until realizing (to Elvis' satisfaction), the master at take twelve! I love it!

21 pages of "Do The Clam", and only 2 Pages sliding to the bottom of the forum of this magnificent Elvis Presley 1950's recording.

Perhaps because there is no such controversy about this song. Everyone agrees that it is great, and rightly so as opposed to Do The Clam, Despite its so called worldwide hit status, Do The Clam remains an embarrassment in the Presley catalog especially when compared to a masterpiece like this. And this was a B side!! Play them back to back for comparison. But because Elvis sang it, and Japan loved it, Clam must be great some fans figure. Everyone knows better. When a song is great, its great. Anyway You Want Me is great.minkahed wrote:21 pages of "Do The Clam", and only 2 Pages sliding to the bottom of the forum of this magnificent Elvis Presley 1950's recording.

Re: "Any Way You Want Me (That's How I Will Be)"
To the contrary, I never liked this song or Elvis' performance of it... perhaps suited to the Vince Everett character but not to Elvis Presley's style of singing. IMO one of his worst from 1957...promiseland wrote:Next to "I Want To Be Free" it showcases some of the best vocals that he had put to tape in the '50's...
Certainly not in the same class as Any Way You Want Me... IMO anyway...

My point is/was to correct mis-information from you stating that this is the way it may have originally sounded in '56. When I strongly doubt that the majority of teenagers who were listening to Presley's music in 1956 where using such dinosaur 1930's equipment as in the YouTube clip you have posted.MikeFromHolland wrote:No one said it isn't. One of his worst from '57? Wow! Ok, I see
I should have said: this is how it may have sounded back in the day when played on a 30's phonogram, but I thought the clip would speak for itself.
My weekend is over, but another one is on its way. Thanks.
