There is a consensus of opinion amongst fans that Paradise Hawaiian Style is a poor film. Lots of opinions which maybe pushes people into thinking that it is a fact, but it is a lot of people all agreeing about something and having the same opinions, but not a fact.

Does that work? My head hurts again.
Sounds fine with me :D

Only parts that can be questioned is "there is a consensus": always be aware of a false sense of consensus because of possible group or peer pressure which may lead to self censorship, like "they will laugh at me when I admit I like this film. To avoid this I will say I don't like it either". Or: "I'm not cool if I say I like it".
And: "lots of opinions" >> how many? how was this measured? Aren't you biased? Etc.

::rocks

.
I was just generalising on the last point as I suspect many will think that if a group of people all have the same opinion, it will make it a fact. Maybe that is where Davelee is coming from. I do think that we are in danger of getting somewhat top heavy on this and I know a point is trying to be made between the difference. Google "Can opinions ever become facts" and the brain might go into shutdown mode. if you look deep enough I believe that the majority of Elvis fans (unfortunately I do not have the numbers) and music critics recognise his good work along with his poorer work. On this board, fans simply want to add their thoughts and opinions. Heavy deep analysis into the words used by a person will undoubtedly cause arguments if we are not careful. But hey ho - my head still hurts.

Sadly davelee clearly isn't interested in facts or opinions but just causing people to get irritated. He is no doubt perfectly aware what is and isn't a fact and the more time we give to his attention seeking, the more we are just encouraging him.

One might argue that someone who holds a racist, or sexist, or misogynistic opinion is wrong.

There is no need to argue if it is indeed, a fact.

And yet, PHS still manages to generate more mystery, suspense and intrigue when Elvis' "Uncle Rick" searches for his lost helicopter keys than The Trouble With Girls manages to craft with it's whole damp squib of a murder sub plot.

Back on topic, it really wasn't unusual for Elvis to record the soundtrack material with many talented musicians and singers though, and the PHS sessions did yield many amusing outtakes and a few enjoyable enough tracks for what they were. And the title track even resurfaced in the Aloha broadcast.

I first heard this track watching The Aloha broadcast for the first time in 1978. Liked it then. Like it now.

Morally wrong, yes, but only according to some people. Certainly, many still think it is fine to be racist, sexist, homophobic or whatever - and events in both America and the UK in the past few weeks highlight that sad issue. And, despite those people being a minority, it isn't, sadly, a tiny minority. But, that aside, we're not talking of morals here but of Elvis films.

I dont think it is good singing at all. Beginning of the bombast IMO and it made me wonder what happened to his beautiful operatic voice of just 5 yrs earlier. I mean compared to Surrender its really awful singing technically. I cringed at it in 1966.

I agree with you, polk! I like Elvis' delivery and performance on the title song. Others certainly agree as it was included in Aloha as stated previously.

The outtakes, particularly take 4 of the PHS title track contain some great over the top vocals, studio chat and laughter from Elvis too, some of which (in edited form) made it onto the FTD soundtrack release. (the "gee it's great" verse seemingly removed from the outtake for example)

The session tapes contain more, including the following exchange ......

"That's it, man" says a still amused Elvis, bringing take 4 to a close

"we can use part of that, believe it or not" Elvis is told, to which he replies "alright, could I hear it back please".

The master take would be a splice between takes 4 and 3.

Why the "could I hear it back please" part of the comment is not included as part of take 4 is unclear, one could argue it demonstrates a somewhat more engaged artist in the material than some may suggest.

PHS takes 4 and 1

That's the session when Elvis is wished "have a good trip" after finishing by the engineer Dave Wiechman. The mood was lovely. BTW.. maybe it wasn't "A Dog's Life" the last song recorded, but Paradise Hawaiian Style"...just a thought.

Yes and as included in the ALOHA special it does stand out. It's a shame he didn't do it in the special... Or included in the extra songs recorded after.

That's a good point polk. Or even a medley of some of the songs from the Hawaiian movies would have been a treat. I understand they did "extra" songs after the show which were included in the US television special, but having some songs in the concert itself would have been a nice treat. To be sure I'll Remember You (which he sang beautifully) was included in the show and is from the Islands.

Yes and as a case in point the extra songs are from 'Blue Hawaii', most anyway...

Do love ALOHA and the opening PHS!!!

Cheers :D

His voice on PHS (the song) is not great. In fact on most songs of that soundtrack his voice sounds like his tongue doubled in size.

And he sounds a LOT older than his age at the time. Listen to the opening of Queenie, the She sells seashells line. It is not a youthful voice you hear there. Bored maybe, but not the sound of a young guy, and not the sound young people were going to be into anymore. This is why Spinout was a bit of a reprieve from all these horrible soundtracks. At least there was a bit of energy there.

I love it! I like the operatic element to it. It's big and powerful. He's obviously enjoying singing it...
