"For The Heart" I just can't love no one but you!
Recorded at Graceland on February 5, 1976, with Brian Christian behind the console out in the RCA truck, with Felton Jarvis producing.
Notable overdubs were done on February 15, at Chip Young's -Young'un Sound Studio- Nashville, with Shane Keister on the Moog (Minimoog), and Dennis Linde overdubbed the excellent bass line on his new song, "For The Heart".
Felton had worked before on post-production with the gifted composer for his "Burning Love", overdubbing electric guitar that time to great effect for the final product. Al Pachucki still assisting Felton and working on Elvis Presley recording projects with overdub and mixing work in Nashville.
Opening side two of "From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee" album, "For The Heart" is my favourite track from said album, and in my opinion, Elvis gives a good performance to this rocker.
Back in 1976, I thought it was neat that the "Hurt" single A/B sides were the same as the album opening A/B sides as well. I love them!
This completes my posts of what I call the uptempo Graceland sessions trilogy.
The others being "Moody Blue" http://www.elvis-collectors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=90672 and "Way Down". http://www.elvis-collectors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=93265

It's not as effortless to him as it was in the past, but you can tell he's really trying.
The bass slide is a highlight, as is the stripped down version that appeared on volume 2 of Our Memories of Elvis.
It made my 10 track configuration from the jungle room sessions:
Way Down
For The Heart
Hurt
She Thinks I still Care (uptempo)
Danny Boy
Moody Blue
Solitaire
Pledging My Love
It's Easy For You
He'll Have To Go

The best song recorded by Elvis in 1976. I always thought that it must have been an A side single.

Sorry, Juan, but this is one song I really don't like at all. I don't like the lyrics, I especially don't like the silly title and I find the whole thing a bit forced. It's extremely annoying when I find myself singing it (true) !
I won't care if I never hear it again. Give me The Last Farewell any day, in preference to this. But good luck to all those who like For The Heart.

I have always liked the song although Elvis' vocal was weak.
I also felt that the song should have been the A- side and that Elvis probably should have recorded a few more Dennis Linde songs.

I like the song but Elvis' performance of it is a little strained. It is the best track from the Graceland sessions along with Moody Blue.
I don't know what's so silly about the song title mentioned by Mr. Morse above.

So do I. I particularly like the orchestration, clichéd though it may be, but I wish the overall sound was more crisp and clear.Juan Luis wrote:One out of two ain't bad. The original version was recorded in september 1975 by Teresa Brewer for an album.

I am in favor of For The Heart as the A-side. Hurt is ok, but For The Heart is the kind of stuff I would like to hear from Elvis. I think he did well on this song. And I like the beat, the flow and the feel he puts into it! I heard For The Heart on US radio before I heard Hurt. And when I first heard it I thought: Finally some guts from our man! I liked it immediately!

The Teresa Brewer version sadly shows us everything that was wrong with the Elvis version. Brewer (who I normally find rather annoying) manages to give over a perky, buoyant performance of the song which, just a year earlier, would have been a walk in the park for Elvis. Sadly, whereas Brewer's recording has a lightness of touch, Elvis just can't get this one to take off. The whole thing sounds heavy and forced, and Elvis even seems to be struggling with this diction. This should, perhaps, have come out sounding in a similar way to the Today sessions, but it just doesn't happen - it's only saving grace is that it was an upbeat song on an album otherwise filled with maudlin ballads.

Re: "For The Heart" I just can't love no one but you!
I think Elvis does a good job on this one - an improvement compared to Teresa's version in my opinion: clearer rhythm pattern, stronger delivery, improved chords changes to the melody and overall convincing sound according to my evaluation. But the song itself is a bit predictable - melody and the lyrics are not so great for my taste. Also there are certain elements of the arrangement that I am not convinced about. I am missing a stronger personality on the electric guitar and a solo (with slight distortion) plus the double voice on the verse is taking sharpness out of the melody according to me. All in all an highlight from the session.

Well, Elvis' diction was never his strongpoint. Those are one of the "flaws" I loved about his singing. So musical that the pronunciation was unimportant. Her version is more country, although it wasn't 1975 for Elvis. The single nevertheless rocked for me especially with the much better production with Linde on bass, and Keister on the synthesiser, standing out. Good piano too!poormadpeter2 wrote:The Teresa Brewer version sadly shows us everything that was wrong with the Elvis version. Notable overdubs and Felton Jarvis-now there's an oxymoron. On the track, this is one the very few enjoyable efforts at these sessions. Elvis breathing and vocal deficiencies are on full display here but still on the whole it is a track i still return to.

This is true about Elvis's diction, but I guess what I'm talking about really is that he sounds as if his mouth is filled with cotton wool. A rather strange thing to say, but there's something not quite right somewhere.Juan Luis wrote:Well, Elvis' diction was never his strongpoint. Those are one of the "flaws" I loved about his singing.
