"MR. Songman"
"In your ivory covered palace, safe behind your walls of glass
You keep staring back at me like a memory from the past
Won't you sing me away to a summer night
Let me hold her in my arms again
I know memory's not re-living
But at least it's not the end"
I love it when Elvis sings the solo chorus! Beautiful! The harmonies sound amazing as well. A song by Donnie Summer recorded at STAX December 1973. Irked the hell out of Lamar Fike. He was pitching songs too! I have found to love this song as years go by. B-side of T-R-O-U-B-L-E from the album "Promised Land". Elvis made sure his friend(s) got the exposure and was happy with the publishing. Produced by Felton Jarvis with strings arranged by Mike Leech.

We go from Burning Love to this mediocre track. The Elvis system at work again. Hack producer Jarvis feeding Elvis his mothers milk of the maudlin. From the can to the pressing factory in a flash. Acarimg producer would have taken a sledge hammer to the demo. Wasnt this another voice writen tradgedy.
Hack n. 1. a person, esp. a professional, who surrenders individual independence, integrity, belief, etc., in return for money or other reward

Not all songs have to be classics to be loved. Great harmonies, great singing by Elvis. Good album track.fn2drive wrote:We go from Burning Love to this mediocre track. The Elvis system at work again. I believe it is, "In your ivory covered palace, safe behind your wall of glass..."
Fike had every reason to be unhappy. He recognized dreck when he heard it and this song is the epitome of dreck. It's another song that makes me feel bad for Elvis that he is reduced to, and accepting of, recording material like this. Ugh!

Two new threads started about the same time Mr Songman v Kentucky Rain - the words night and day come to mind. Elvis sings this well enough but it's a poor song, in my opinion.fn2drive wrote:We go from Burning Love to this mediocre track. The Elvis system at work again. Re: "MR. Songman"
Thanks, Juan Luis. Not ranked amongst my all time favorite Elvis' songs, but still a nice tune, imo. Overall, I really like the Stax songs: "I know the good outweigh the bad", at least to me. So, "another dime for you, Mr. Songman", as far as I'm concerned.
Will there be more threads on Felton Jarvis' produced songs? Why not? I read them as threads on Elvis' songs - and I hope we'll have many more threads on all kinds of Elvis' songs, from any producer, from the 50s till the 70s. Always a joy to read and listen.

I love Mr. Songman, and T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
But hey...different strokes for different folks.

Re: "MR. Songman"
When I put the Promised Land CD in the player, it's usually to listen to Mr. Songman and Love Song Of The Year . Man! they're gonna put me away. I just know it!
Elvis fan. From Sun to Sundial.
Re: "MR. Songman"
It's a pleasant enough song. I really like the piano on it for some reason. Not a personal favourite, but I never skip it when it comes on.

I very much enjoy MR. Songman. I can still remember buying the Single as a young teen and playing this and T-R-O-U-B-L-E often.

I think we need an Elvis' Songs section, where we could discuss song by song.
Correct lyrics, info and stuff.

Re: "MR. Songman"
You gotta give credit to whoever decided to pair the new TROUBLE with the Mr Songman as they constitute a 'concept' single. Both sides centered around a piano player in a bar. Not that it was an earth shattering concept but the single represents two different experiences in roughly the same setting.

That would be Elvis. But the piano was just a coincidence. Good observation!Tmorelli01 wrote:You gotta give credit to whoever decided to pair the new TROUBLE with the Mr Songman as they constitute a 'concept' single. Gotta hand it to RCA and Felton, so desperate for a b-side they have to recycle an album track from the Promised Land LP.Tmorelli01 wrote:You gotta give credit to whoever decided to pair the new TROUBLE with the Mr Songman as they constitute a 'concept' single. There's no concept here, sadly. Any connection is accidental at best.
