Where Does Love Go

..

Maybe Elvis is smiling somewhere. I know I am. There's certainly a touch of Inspector Clouseau in this...

For those who care: I remastered the whole vinyl-rip for your listening pleasure, as the original record seems to be quite worn (Side 2 sounds even worse).
Thanks very much--I'm looking forward to listening to one of the albums Elvis loved most.
Charles Boyer had a pretty sad life--his son committed suicide shortly after producing and persuading his father to record Where Does Love Go?. And Boyer himself committed suicide two days after the death of his wife of 44 years.

All that aside, Boyer was a terrific actor, one equally at home in lush Hollywood melodramas (Love Affair, History Is Made at Night) and foreign arthouse fare (Pepe Le Moko, The Earrings of Madame De...). So this album should be pretty good, given the talent involved.

Was it Charles Boyer who said "Da plane, da plane boss"? Or am I getting my actors mixed up?

No, that was Hervé Villechaize (though like Boyer he also committed suicide).

I asked Ginger Alden and Linda Thompson if they remembered Where Does Love Go and both confirmed remembering it.

Linda: "He absolutely LOVED this track and so do I! It was produced by my friend, Barry Devorzon! Elvis was a very sensitive soul."

Ginger: "I sure do! I am writing about it. It's a beautiful song. I bought a tape of it years back..."

Elvis must have have played the album to every girl he dated...

Outstanding post and cool follow up! Thanks, Marko. I love it when people go to the primary sources themselves and confirm new, interesting and important information pieces to the EP puzzle.

On that note:
From Ginger's comment, I assume she is still writing her memoirs and is intending to publish it? I have items and photos that she may or may not be interested in using in her book someday (all related to her and her story, of course). If you are in contact with her and can pass it on, just PM me anytime.

If not, that's OK too. Thanks again, & all my best.

Ginger has been active on Facebook over the past few months. Might be easiest to connect with her there.

Thanks for the kind words N8. Ginger is writing her memoirs. She is active on Facebook and is easy to contact through that. That's what I did.

Hi there!! :D :D :D.
elvisjock wrote:Excerpts from Careless Love, by Peter Guralnick

PP. 258-259 (1967) "The atmosphere on the set (Clambake) was one of almost enforced gaiety. Once again there were practical jokes, cherry bombs, cream pie and water balloon fights, with even the director, Arthur Nadel, getting into the act. It was like a staged remembrance of things past - but there was a wistful note, too, that did not escape some members of the cast. And it hardly seemed coincidental that Elvis kept listening to a single album over and over throughout the filming, a collection of song lyrics recited in heavily accented English by the French actor Charles Boyer. The album was titled "Where Does Love Go?," and the fully orchestrated arrangements were as lushly romantic as Boyer's recitations, with melancholy spoken versions of "What Now My Love," Edith Piaf's "La Vie en Rose," Charles Aznavour's "Venice Blue," and "When the World Was Young." Elvis' favorite song by far was "Softly As I Leave You," a dying man's profession of love for his wife, and he gave the album to various members of the cast and crew while playing it again and again for the guys, who could not understand what he saw in its morbid mood."

pp. 459-460 (1973) "He was, everyone agreed, in a funny kind of mood, even for Elvis - chastened, brooding, almost perplexed over what could have finally caused Priscilla to leave, after all he had done to drive her to it. Some of the guys thought it was simply the humiliation of her going off with someone else, particularly someone that Elvis knew and admired, but it seemed as much a mood of almost autumnal regret. He kept listening to that damned Charles Boyer album "Where Does Love Go?" over and over, until it just about drove them all crazy - listening intently to those melancholy recitations, as if they alone might provide the answer to the question that the album's title posed, the one question that seemed to be forever on his mind."

p. 524 (1974) "He played them (Voice) "Softly As I Leave You" from the Charles Boyer album over and over. Sherrill already knew the song, and one night the two of them sat down at the piano, and Sherrill started singing while Elvis did the Charles Boyer recitation."

p. 525 (1974) "He loved to spend time in his room singing to her (Ann Pennington), and "he gave me a Charles Boyer album, there was a song 'Where Does Love Go (When It Leaves The Heart),' he would play it over and over and say, 'Listen to that, the way he says those lines. It's so romantic."

Thank you! "elvisjock" for this super cool topic 8). I have to blame you because of this I had to search for this album. I found a cd version but it misses some of the songs of the original album , so I decided to look for the LP version. Found a still sealed copy and now I am enjoying it. What a beautiful album :smt007. Bye for now :smt006.

The same Roger Moore who starred in "The Spy Who Loved Me," which is believed to be the last film Elvis screened at his Midnight Movies.

The same Roger Moore who greeted Elvis at Los Angeles' famed Moulin Rouge in March 1958. Moore was an unknown at the time.

This single apparently did not chart, except at one Memphis home, where it hit #1, with a bullet:
