It's probable Bill Black's double bass is not heard to any great effect because the sounds we are hearing are solely from the offline camera mic, "amberola1b" used in his video presentation - not the most favorable set of circumstances to judge the sonics of a 57 year old wire recording.
I'm sure the bass response will be more evident whenever we get to hear the track from a careful inline transfer.
Wise words.

To JamesVRoy - I have to say that it is great you managed to get Scotty to hear this audio from 57 years ago. We're all amazed to hear a performance so rare and unexpected. For Scotty he's just had the pleasure of hearing a live recording of this tune that he's actually playing on. What a cool momento for him.

You will note that I did not comment on who was at fault, even though it was, as usual, you in the middle.
I simply made a comment that people were arguing about a positive in the Elvis world.
And then you unfurl an insult.
Well done for continuing to live down to your sad reputation.

Ironic.

My statement to you is a fact, while many of your posts are often nothing but insults aimed my way.

Anyone may see you often target my posts out of the blue, and you are never complimentary.

Grow up.
Supremely ironic. Unsurprisingly, you seem to have ignored the posting made by 'billyblues' and in particular the quote I had made which he has highlighted.

"Anyone may see" that my original posting was to thank James, express my delight that Scotty had heard the recording but also point out (with a smiley) that the jury was still out as regards the date/location. Your proposed dating may be right. It's simply your attitude that is wrong, which I have been at pains to point out many times over the years.

I apologise to readers on this board in general that my intial posting has spawned a partial derailment of this thread. FECC should be about shared enjoyment of all aspects of EP, not about points scoring. Yeah, yeah, Doctor, that last sentence is ironic, too, in your eyes.

Why do I bother . . .

I have in my Elvis stuff a wire recording of Elvis but I don't know what it is as I don't have any recorder to play it.

It was in a lot that I bought a few times ago.

Have you looked for any recorder to check it what you have on this wire recording? You don't need to purchase it a recorder. Just play it once with a microphone to capture the sound. Maybe the biggest issue is to find the damn wire record machine to play it.

How do you know Elvis is on it if you have neither heard or played it and what does 'I bought a few times ago' mean please?!

Well...you'd better try to find a recorder really fast or the Sun book will be delayed again if it turns out to be a new Hayride song!!!! Just kidding

Wire recorders are on ebay and check craigslist. they are not that difficult to find.

Advertise in the wanted section of craigslist and someone could contact you.

You really need to find out what is on that wire.

It could be worth far more than the investment of a recorder.

And after you play the wire you could re-sell it for about what you paid.

I have bought the lot from an Elvis fan. It was in the lot and I didn't buy it for the wire recording.

I have bought that 10 years ago but it doesn't matter when I bought it.

On the wire recording it's wrote Elvis and I am almost sure it contains Elvis.

Of course it can be erased and replaced by something else but I really doubt because he was fan.

I can also contains something without any impotance but it's sure it's something from the fifties because there was other recording system after that.

I think also that's it's worth to try to listen to it.

The problem is the voltage and the HZ.

there are transformator to convert 240 V to 110 V but the problem is the 50 Hz as it's a motor that turns the roll, the Hz have their importance.

If it's only a question of speed, it can be corrected by soft.

What is the craigslist

Phil, where in the world are you? If you search "Wire recording" on youtube you`ll see a lot of wire recordings. Maybe if you find some from your part of the world, you could contact the poster and see if it`s possible for you to come play the wire at his/hers place........just an idea.

Do you know if the former owner did listen to the wire before he sold it to you?

I am from Belgium but I don't try to acquire a wire recording.

I just want to record the wire that I have.

I didn't ask anything to the former owner as I haven't bought the lot for the wire recording and the former owner lives in the USA and I really don't know who he is..

Phil wrote:I am from Belgium but I don't try to acquire a wire recording. Yes I understand, but you might be able to play your wire on a wire recorder if you found a person near you who has one.

Try this link, seems that this youtube poster is from Belgium and has a wire recorder. http://www.youtube.com/user/videorestore2?feature=watch

This is a video of his wire recorder and I think the wire he is playing is in Belgium languish....or Dutch.

I think you should buy a wire player, or whatever they are called!

I haven't a clue how much they are, but if it is not too expensive, it is worth it.

Otherwise it could sit there your whole life and you will never know what is on that piece of wire. It is HIGHLY unlikely it is anything as remotely amazing as the topic of this thread, but you just never know.

It's better to know, than to always wonder my friend!

My understanding is that most of the old wire recorders are due to be restored before they work, so you need to know how to do that. A working machine might be quite expensive.

Yes I think that too.

Almost all the machine need a restore and it's almost impossible to find a working one.

I also have saw a lot on ebay but never here in europe always in the US with the electrical problem of the 60 Hz.

If I were you, I would be more than curious to find out what I have acquired... specially if it's such an atypical recording format as this wire.
And, who knows, maybe it belonged to the same person who recorded IFTRTF...

Hi Phil, is there any chance of showing us a pic of the wire spool with the "Elvis" annotation written on it?
