Re: Complete Masters compared/contrasted with Franklin Mint

Post by elvissessions »

As you'll see, I've edited my post on "Honky Tonk Angel," Claus.

I had in mind the 18-track reissue. However, I now believe my ears were playing tricks on me, and all versions match.

About every third listen I can trick myself into thinking there's more on the 18-track Promised Land, and I believe this has to do with the EQ and the way I'm reacting to it.

The higher tone of the remaster sounds like a sharper attack to me, and I'm sure that's what's throwing me. It's not really more clipped, but it hits harder and feels more abrupt (to my ears). This isn't a criticism of the Complete Masters vesion, as (slipping into personal opinion mode here), I prefer the Aneseni version.

However, I think you've caught me again, and I don't have a version that suggests there's any difference.

This hadn't made it on the first post in this thread, as it was very much unresolved in my mind. And I supsect it will remain so until someone reliable provides an original vinyl copy for us to review.
Overall, my USA Promised Land vinyl sounds generally worse than the USA Good Times... And about Honky, it's that way on the vinyl.

Today masters sound very good on the FTD. The bad thing was that each group of songs (masters, platinum, sunset, TT&F and New ones) all sounded different from each other, even at different volumes.

Thanks God I use realgain. Indeed I couldn't live without it, as there's nothing more annoying for me than listening to different songs at different volumes. Tom Jones 24 hours was mastered at around 97 db, while some elvis cds from the 80's sound in the low 80's. The difference in sound actually awoke my child in the car one day.
Interesting my UK vinyl sounds awesome & yes as you state the start of Honky Tonk Angel is clipped on the vinyl too ..............tho not quite as bad but we are talking MINUTE difference ................ to these ears anyway.

Clipping on analogue...is that possible?

Is that like a digital dropout.

We're having a recurring issue with this. I've begun using words like "snip" or "missing."

Most of what we're talking about right now does not involve waveform distortions or dropouts.

The issue at hand is starts (especially) or finishes that omit material that was present on the original masters. Fade-outs really should be a separate issue we may get to eventually. I'm focusing first on edits that sound as if they're accidental -- timing errors or whatnot.

So far I have included only two confirmed examples of these (Promised Land and the overdubbed Tomorrow Night), and both of these were documented months ago.

So far, other possible examples check out one way or the other -- either regarded as intact or matching original masters.

I used the word "clipped" as in something is missing, part of the start of the song has been clipped .................. No, certainly wasn't insinuating that an analogue cut can have digital glitch. Thanks.

Iván, it is. Disc 14, Track 25.
I wonder who remastered this. Imo it sounds better than on the 60's box, although it is most likely the same mix (90's reverb?)...

Iván, IIRC somebody wrote that it's the same mix as on the "Burning Love"-CD but a different mastering, without the awful artificial reverb.

Is it really? I thought the one featured recently on SRO, etc was a different one. Interesting!

By the way disc 14 could have been a disc on its own. Classic ELvis, mostly unknown for the great public

Aren't they different versions? The one on the 60's box is the 3:03 master, "previously unreleased", which is the home recording with overdubs, while the one on Franklin Mint/CM is the 2:05 master (short version), recorded on June 20th, 1967.

Thank you, Blue River. Thank you, rjm. Thank you, Ken.

And the longer june 67 master is there too? There are 3 masters of the song (Elvis must have loved it): the home recording with overdubs (that fits to a glove with the june 66 session), the master on the original Speedway LP, and the longer master released on Speedway double feature.

Where's the information that digital copies from the 90's were used coming from? Anesini knows how to operate an analogue tape machine.

Found a "glitch" in Make Me Know It.

1. 2007 remaster
2. DCC remaster

I'm sure it'll be corrected on the 2011 Legacy Edition.

"Glitch" - that's the word I was looking for when I tried to describe the issue on one of the songs. Right now I can't remember, I guess it was "Merry Christmas, Baby". Have to check it though.

Update: Yup, there's a digital glitch at 0:05. Didn't notice it on previous releases.
