Do you like Elvis' Greatest sh*t album?

Post by buddy holly »

Just bought Elvis' Greatest sh*t on e-bay and it's on it's way to me. I really hated this when it came out on vinyl and now after all those years I'm actually looking forward to it. The cover has many funny details although I personally would have liked another picture better. The track listing is a lot of fun but I don't understand why Beach Boy Blues and US Male are on it and personally I also like The Walls Have Ears. All in all I think it's a well thought "concept" album now but it made me mad when it just came out (I was a teenager back then).

I wonder what you think of this album.

Tracks;
Old MacDonald Had A Farm
Ito Eats
There's No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car
Confidence
Yoga Is As Yoga Does
Song Of The Shrimp
U.S. Male
Fort Lauderdale Chamber Of Commerce
Signs Of The Zodiac (Soundtrack)
The Bullfighter Was A Lady
Wolf Call
Can't Help Falling In Love (Outtakes)
He's Your Uncle , Not Your Dad
Scratch My Back
The Walls Have Ears
Poison Ivy League
Beach Boy Blues
Dominic (Soundtrack)
Queenie Wahines Papaya (Outtake)
Clambake (Medley)
Datin'
Are You Lonesome Tonight (Live - 1977)
Well, That's All Folks.

Bring joy, avoid misery and be grateful

This album is in extremely bad taste.

Appallingly bad taste, but anyone who doesn't like it has obviously had a humour bypass.

It's more of a dig at the crap Elvis was forced to record rather than the man himself. It was, quite obviously I would have thought, put together by a fan or fans who know their stuff.

And the digs at the Elvis industry and "that obsequious little toad" (IIRC) Charlie Hodge were a hoot.

And the sound quality was rather good, as I recall.

It's a bit of fun - remember fun before political correctness ruined it? People need to lighten up about it.

Don't own this one. But like it or not, it's a part of Elvis's legacy, just like other well-known boots from the era. Like Elvis's own original albums they have become classics in their own right, important and fascinating pieces of the great Elvis puzzle...

RCA Victim is a VERY clever and funny label name when you consider this story (the guy he's talking about is The Glendale Ghost):
Tallhair AKA Ger Rijff wrote:... After the FBI had busted several bootleggers, in the US,

and put them behind bars, one, after getting back on the streets, had

lost his wife and kids, thru a divorce, and wanted to spit his pain and

frustrations, in the direction of RCA, who were responsible, in the first

place, for working together with the FBI, in coming down on him, and

his buddies. Thus was born, the Greatest sh*t album. It was the last

boot, before he vanished, from the scene, for good...

Yeah, and "Ito Eats", "Song of the Shrimp", "Datin'" and "The Bullfighter Was a Lady" are pretty nice pop tunes too!

This is correct. However, it is one CD that I will never own. Not only do I not need the music (again) on the CD, but the photo is in incredibly poor taste.

The cover alone would put me off buying it.

I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

I own the LP. The back side is quite funny with fake commercials for other albums like "The shower sessions", "The duet album" and so on. I don´t have the possibility to scan it.

I think it is a bit funny. One can not look at this release seriously since it has apparently been made with a lot of humor by someone who liked Elvis. The purpose is to show what Elvis was forced to do by RCA, The Colonel and the movie companies and not to put Elvis down.

I like US Male though. It's a good song.

You´re right samses, replace US Male with This is our dance, in my opinion, Elvis worst studio recording of the 70:s

Lighten up about death and the fact that a corpse is not to be ridiculed in such a manner? Is nothing sacred to you, Scott? Apparently, but do try to think how others think of this.

I'm normally all for all-out comedy, but since the day my brother brought this album cover (as shown and reported in a newspaper or magazine back in 1978) to my attention at age 9, I've always found this insulting to Elvis and yes, in extremely poor taste. No kid , at the very least , should have to see such an image -sadly one was taken illicitly on top of that by a turn-coat "member of the Presley family" for cash and subsequent national viewing in supermarkets nationwide. That image staring back at the public in (late '77?) was a slap in the face to Elvis fans, and yes, a national and even global legend.

Say what one will about Elvis' artistic low-lights (Likethebike has made some interesting arguments about the overall artistic contributions of Elvis over each decade contrary to those who say he "wasted" the '60s or somehow "let us down") but no one - not even a super-rich and famous performer- deserves this.

We'd heard not long ago here how this was some kind of revenge against RCA and their crackdown on bootleggers (one of Vic's tales?) but but it strikes me that the dignity and memory of Elvis (including living family and friends) were the "collateral damage" in this sick attempt at humor and apparent revenge.

Thumbs down!

Why would "Life" be included? Are you implying that it is a substandard track?

Well if they were gonna do an album like that they should have included Mama Liked The Roses. In any case, I like most of the tracks on the CD. As far as the cover is concerned, it's a disgrace. Cheeky b****ds how dare they call so many good songs sh*t?

Certainly not.

But others have.
