Your so Square--Baby I don't care
(Your So Square) Baby I Don't Care, was recorded in May of 1957 as part of the Jailhouse Rock soundtrack.
Buddy Holly recorded a nice version not too long after Elvis' version was released.
This super catchy tune is one of my top ten All-time favorite Elvis songs. The first time I heard the song, I loved it.
I first heard it on a late night television showing of Jailhouse Rock in the mid-70's. I had not bought it on record by that time. After that I had to search out the Album, "A date with Elvis".
I later found out that Elvis played the bass part on it, and the intro remains one of the most memorable in his catalog.
This intro was later used to as the opening vamp to start off his 1969 Las Vegas comeback concerts.
I am very surprised Elvis never sang this on TV or in concert, concidering what a classic recording it is.
This is one tune he should have revisted in the 60's or 70's.
Or at least sang it at one of his late 1957 shows.
Tell me who doesn't like this record? It is just flat out great.

i love this song and the bass guitar on it is great, its better than what BiIl Black could have done imo. i think all the Jailhouse rock songs are great and it is the best soundtrack (imo
) and the film is great too, i could watch it over and over again and love it still(but i could with all his films, even PHS
)
its a great track.

Those early film soundtracks prove that songs for film don't have to be any less good, or any less commercial than normal studio ones !
I remember when Buddy Holly had a hit single with it in 1961, people were arguing that Elvis had copied it from him !

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
It's a stone classic, and he might have made something special of it in 1969-70.
Of all people, Joni Mitchell covered it, IIRC.

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
Now that reminds me of a photo recently placed in the Picture section with rumours of footage from said same show.
Bill Black left the session after being told he had to play that Bass Guitar and not his old favourite double which he refused, many say becasue he didn't have a handle on it.
The photo in question shows a concert with Bill playing that style Bass Guitar.
But that intro on that song played by Elvis, who was just as green with the instrument as Bill, just goes to show that sometimes Elvis was just too good a singer to be recognised fo his musicianship skills as often as perhaps he should be.

Yes Joni Mitchell did cover it, and I did make a point of finding the correct album, but I was very dissappointed with her rendition.

Yes, indeed. And he's never given sufficient credit for the brilliant violinist that he was.Steve_M wrote:Now that reminds me of a photo recently placed in the Picture section with rumours of footage from said same show.

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
A very good point. I have to think that Elvis playing bass guitar when The Beatles went to see him, and the sitdown sessions of 1968, where he plays a killer guitar on all the "sitdown" numbers, was his way of indicating to important people ...... >>> YES, I CAN PLAY, YES, I'M A MUSICIAN, AND YES, I'M IMPORTANT!Steve_M wrote:But that intro on that song played by Elvis, who was just as green with the instrument as Bill, just goes to show that sometimes Elvis was just too good a singer to be recognised fo his musicianship skills as often as perhaps he should be.
Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
Perhaps because that was more in private than on record or in concert Spelly.
I think Elvis regarded himself as more of a fiddler, but I've never met anyone who witnessed his performances.

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
The bassline from "Baby I dont care" was the intro of the 69 Vegas concerts.

Classic track - one of the coolest from the 50s.
And Elvis' bass lines are terrific and contribute immeasurably to making the song so great.
Our man did indeed have talent.

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
It is indeed one of the classic songs of the rock n roll era! I love the way it starts with a subtle and sexy bass line and the song explodes into life with Elvis' vocal. I also very much like Holly's version - which has a completely different structure!
I remember trying to merge the two when i was a kid - using tapes and records! It was a bit of a mess and the clunks on the tape where the recording was started and stopped didn't help! Lol

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
Regarding that YouTube video:
Isn't there a "blooper" or two in there where in a few scenes Scotty has sunglasses on then when the scene switches they're not there?? Or am I thinking of an entirely different song/sequence from the "Jailhouse Rock" movie?

I always liked his accordian playing best. Most people take it up to just pickup chicks but he was a virtuoso.

I think the bassline on EP's version puts it ahead -- to say nothing of the vocal.AndrewJ wrote:It is indeed one of the classic songs of the rock n roll era! I'm not sure it would have fitted a later live context, though. I think that it's very much an encapsulation of 50's youth culture -- even moreso than his other classics. Of course, it could have had an awesome "sound" at those early Vegas shows, but I think Elvis did well to leave it untouched. Never the twain shall meet . . .

Don't forget the wonderful "vocal-track only " mix of the master on Out In Hollywood (FTD 2000) or the alternate vocal overdub issued on Close Up (BMG 2003) -- both essential listening!Cryogenic wrote:I think the bassline on EP's version puts it ahead -- to say nothing of the vocal.

Re: Your so Square--Baby I don't care
Doctor....my cd player has a nice little feature on it called "balance". I was playing around with this the other day and I could hear vocal only on the take from "close-up", simply by sliding the bar so that I could only hear the left channel. I can do this with every binaural track released with varying degrees of success depending on the bleed over of the 2 tracks. However on "your so square" it works really good and nearly completely eliminates the band. And if I slide the bar to the right channel, then I have a near perfect Karaoke track and ELvis' vocal is gone. Very cool.drjohncarpenter wrote:Don't forget the wonderful "vocal-track only " mix of the master on Out In Hollywood (FTD 2000) or the alternate vocal overdub issued on Close Up (BMG 2003) -- both essential listening!Cryogenic wrote:I think the bassline on EP's version puts it ahead -- to say nothing of the vocal.
