Buddy Holly and Elvis

Post by The Purple Gang »

Had he lived Buddy Holly would have been 70 years old today (7 Sep). Although he was heavily influenced by Elvis he was a very important figure in rock 'n' roll in his own right. A major talent when he died at 22 and a performer & songwriter with immense potential.

BBC Radio 2 broadcast a documentary on Tuesday about Buddy that included a couple of interesting references to Elvis. Sonny Curtis of the Crickets remembered Elvis' first appearance in Lubbock, Texas. Elvis wore red pants, orange jacket and white buck shoes. Sonny described him as 'the coolest thing we had ever seen'.

Jerry Allison, also of the Crickets, says that Buddy taught Elvis the song 'Money Honey' one night at the Cotton Club in Lubbock.

Happy birthday Buddy. :) :(

I like Buddy Holly, and yes it was a shame he died when he did. I wonder how his career would have progressed through the 60's and beyond..

However, this should really be in the 'off-topic' section..

Buddy was already realizing his talent at 22, having achieved success as singer, songwriter, bandleader, producer and performer. He made great music that influenced almost every rocker to come, most importantly the Beatles.

His ambition was in many ways more far-reaching than anyone of his time. In addition to the above, before he died he was trying to start his own music publishing firm to ensure full control of his art and career. It's almost certain he'd still be involved in music to some degree in 2006. His 1959 death was a horrible loss.

Bless JI, but it's unlikely this ever happened. If so, one can see Elvis playing "Money Honey" to Holly, as it was a part of Elvis, Scotty and Bill's set very early on.

"Money Honey" spent eleven weeks at #1 on the R&B charts in late 1953, issued by the great Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters on the Atlantic label. Elvis probably bought a copy on 78 for Christmas.

Yes, it does sound improbable. Jerry actually says that Buddy was 'the one who taught him the words and tune to Money Honey.' So, maybe, as is likely, Elvis already knew the record and Buddy just helped him with the chords and remembered more of the lyrics.

Elvis played the Cotton Club on 6 Jan 1955, and then on the Hayride show of 22 Jan he's said to have done Money Honey. Who knows :?

Another story from Jerry (JI) is that Buddy made Elvis a leather wallet in pink and black with Elvis' name on it. This was dropped off for Elvis in Memphis. Wonder if he ever got it!

This "Hayride" date has been issued:

Tweedlee Dee
Money Honey [missing intro]
Blue Moon Of Kentucky [bad high pitch throughout]
I Don’t Care If The Sun Don't Shine
That's All Right [includes a steel guitar solo]

However, it is likely Elvis and the "Blue Moon Boys" were doing the Drifters hit before they played Lubbock in January.

I don't think that JI was there - Buddy is pictured with Bob Montgomery in the audience at the gig, when they were still a 'western and bop' duo. This was the gig which pushed Holly firmly towards rock n roll. I vaguely remember a vague quote from Allison saying that Buddy didn't want a drummer 'cos Elvis didn't have one' - but that the next time they came through Lubbock (date?) he had a drummer, so JI was recruited.

I'm sure it is Buddy's early collaborater Ben Hall who filmed the colour footage of Elvis and the boys in Lubbock.

I was saying last night that Elvis made people want to be a rock n roller but it was Buddy Holly who showed them how to do it. Still a great loss ...

Hey,

while we're on the subject, there's a great new CD out called 'GOTTA ROLL' featuring Buddy's original 1955 / 1956 demos of

- Down The Line ( 2 versions )
- I Wanna Play House With You
- Love Me
- Don't Come Back Knockin'
- I Guess I Was A Fool
- Baby Won't You Come Out Tonight

and a bunch more, with excellent liner notes in a large, fold-out inlay.

The sound-quality is ok for the age, rather mediocre for most tracks, plus the pitch is off on one or two, but other that that, it's great to hear these early Buddy Holly attempts at Rockabilly UNDUBBED for the first time ( at least it was a first for me ) .....

Get it on Amazon, or Play, it's only about 13 Euros, 8 GBP .....

It's on my car stereo constantly .....

Cheers

It's likely that this box set is a copy of the incredible VigOtone box set, What You Been A-Missin' which came out in late 1994:

Good news. A English label ( Cherry Red ) has located & released the Pre-Decca demos. I am dying to hear these cuts ( esp. Love Me & Blue Days, Black Nights ). Holly on Decca is very good rockabilly.
