Re: GOLDEN COINS
This is among my least played lps but I do enjoy it every so often. Golden Coins has a decent melody.
Nice post Chris.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Too bad about SAND CASTLES. It would have been one of the few things good in that movie. Terrible movie. Terrible looking Elvis. Bad songs.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Sand castles is cut from the movie PHS because there was too much singing with Donna Butterworth in the movie. She can be heard on: Queenie wahine’s papaya – Datin’ – Bill Bailey won’t you please come home in the movie.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Perhaps some of you may be interested in this fan’s feelings when he received and listened to the album as it came out back then. My general feeling was at first a feeling of surprise and disappointment.
Surprise, because I wasn’t accustomed to this drop of quality in Elvis’ music, although the beginning of this move can already be noted in the Girl Happy soundtrack.
Diasappointment, because the things that made the greatness of Elvis till then were suddenly in question : the sound quality (too dry…what has become of the glorious sound of studio B ?), too much substandard songs, and the surprising and new fact that the once flawless vocals of Elvis seem to be less precise and concentrated and aren’t quite able to allow us to forget the above-mentioned deficiences. Elvis’ usual perfectionism seemed to have vanished and I didn’t know then that it would become worse for a while.
Having said this and in spite of all this, I would like to point out that there are a couple of songs that I have pleasure to listen to from time to time : Hey Litlle Girl (thanks to Floyd Cramer’s piano and Grady Martin’s sharp guitar licks and although there is no musical bridge and some somewhat overplayed drum parts by Kenneth Buttrey), Wisdom of the Ages, Kismet, Golden Coins, So close yet so far and to a slightly lesser extent Harem Holiday. Even Animal Instinct or Shake that Tambourine are potentially subject to receive a listening time when I’m in the mood. That’s probably what they call the Elvis magic.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Harem holiday was a good movie-deal for the money.
It costs the producer $ 1.400.000 salary and costs
This amount is spliced into: $ 1.000.000 salary and $ 400.000 costs and promotion payable in a weekly salary during shooting.
A quarter of the salary was to be paid to Elvis at $1000 a week over five years.
Paid:
10% = $ 100.000 to William Morris Agency;
25% = $ 250.000 to Colonel Parker;
The costs were split into 50/50 = $ 200.000 for Elvis / $ 200.000 for All Star shows (Colonel Parker).
Outside the movie contract Colonel Parker was paid $ 25.000 as technical advisor.

In reality, a highway is what Elvis is looking at on Oahu in the bottom photo.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Has someone asked for your opinion on whether you like the song? That's not what this topic is about. Or do they genuinely desire to be in the spotlight at all times?

Re: GOLDEN COINS
This is indeed a great scene, if done in an intentionally humourous way, but the rest of the movie is awful. So Close, Yet So Far is the only decent song and it suffers from poor recording. I don't mind Animal Instinct but overall the soundtrack matches the movie - awful.
