GOLDEN COINS
Per a reader/contributor request.
Musically, the lyrics are trite and simple, but being one of the first albums I owned way back in the late sixties (a gift from a friend of the mono version), I have a guilty pleasure for this and several other tracks on the album. I measure the quality of a song and performance by my willingness to let it play in the car or at the house if I have a guest with me (family doesn’t count – they get it all). There’s not a song that would be on a disc / USB that I’d play for a guest from this album.
The sheet music is unusual (see below), in that the first two lines, and the second two lines share the same notes and chords, and are written with a repeat frame. Interesting.
In Elvis Monthly Issue No. 72, a review of this song reads as follows: “Elvis the Sheik? Here Elvis sings an Eastern-type ballad once again in a crooning voice to the backing of mandolins. El’s voice, as ever, excels on the deep fruity tones and the way he slides over the extra-specially sentimental lyric is guaranteed to make all El fan’s blood run cold. If your mind is as distorted as mine you will see visions of camels and coloured rugs before your eyes when listening to this track! Listen out especially for that fabulous soft roll of drums.” NOTE: I’m not sure what ‘fruity tones’ are.
The overall opinion of the reviewer of the album in this issue was “… one of the most fascinating LP’s Elvis has made (he had not seen the film), though not his best by a long chalk.” Fair enough.
This issue also has an article about the film, asking “Is this the most spectacular El film ever?” The contributor thinks so. I, very regrettably, took a friend to see this in 1970 when Elvis’ films were being shown as Saturday afternoon filler, and as the film ran, I sank further and further into my seat. I don’t recall seeing this since I was nine when it first played at the theatre, and liked it then. My opinion changed that afternoon, and has sunk further as I lament what Elvis choose to do.
My look at the album:
HAREM HOLIDAY starts off with a bum note and goes downhill. One of, if not the worst, title tracks (in Europe anyhow).
MY DESERT SERENADE is okay, Elvis singing well, though the lyrics are poor.
GO EAST – YOUNG MAN is a poor song, but Elvis sings it so well, and it’s kinda fun, I don’t mind it.
MIRAGE and KISMET are similar and both are well-liked by me.
SHAKE THAT TAMBOURINE the reviewer found in the same style as DO THE CLAM – so that can’t be good. Tell the guy at the ’68 recordings NOT to shake that tambourine. Okay.
HEY LITTLE GIRL is (one of) the most cringeworthy songs performed in an Elvis movie. Just picture the scene. Listen to the lyrics. Case closed.
SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR is one of the better tracks on the album, but the bar is low, though I do appreciate Elvis’ vocal efforts.
The two bonus songs *ANIMAL INSTINCT” and “WISDOM OF THE AGES” are ‘weird,’ do seem to fit with the other songs on this album, and I do enjoy them.
An essential read I have had since the early 1980s is “Studies in Modern Music – Elvis Presley” by Robert Matthew-Walker. His review of the film was “Presley’s credibility took a sharp downward turn. Almost all of the songs in this film are mediocre, and scarcely bear serious attention.”
Later he writes “with ‘Golden Coins’ we touch rock bottom.” I would say others deserve that recognition, but perhaps we’re just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
An album I listen to from time to time, it’s quickly over, and I like Elvis' voice – but totally wasted with this material in 1965!

Re: GOLDEN COINS
I recall the first time I heard this track when I was about 12 that I thought the lyric "Persian rugs to enhance your floor" was pretty lame and as I got older that opinion has not changed. I am surprised there was not a call to re-write or edit out that line. It still would not have made it a classic but I can take " Baby If Youll Give Me All Your Love" and its "pounds and pounds of chocolate candy" over Golden Coins rug enhancing any day.
In a strange way the HS album is one that I have played more in recent years than I ever did back in the 80's and I think that is due to lack of over familiarity. Maybe the ballads work better for me now than they did when I was a kid plus the DF release finally made the soundtrack sound better than the UK vinyl that sounded very flat.
Its a shame also that one of the earlier takes of the title track was not used or spliced in as I agree he sounds flat on the master on the "Gonna travel" intro.
May have been asked on here before but is there any info on whether any of the songwriters actually came up with a song/demo for a track actually called Harum Scarum ??

Re: GOLDEN COINS
On my playlist I cut out Harem Holiday, Shake That Tambourine and Hey Little Girl and kept the rest of the album. It works, not great songs, but with a rather consistent atmosphere, which I find appealing.
To my ears, this was the first recording session that you can hear he is uninspired. He does not give 100 % and is not quite as precise on the pitch as before.

Well, if I may, I take the DF mixes of this album. And there are at least, to me, a few tracks I can lend my ear to: Kismet, Shake That Tambourine, Hey Little Girl, Golden Coins, So Close Yet So Far From Paradise, Animal Instinct and Wisdom Of The Ages....(So far from the rock'n roll king we once knew..)

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Perhaps it is interesting to know:
The song Let yourself go (Byers) was selected for songspot # 2 but replaced by track 2403-1 Animal instinct (Giant- Baum-Kaye). Finally the scene with Animal instinct was cut from the movie.
Let yourself go was used later on for the movie Speedway.
The way for a song selection for movies is hard to follow.

Good observation. And imagine the musicians recording the music for this session. Among them: Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Floyd Cramer, The Jordanaires, Grady Martin, Charlie McCoy, etc. The possibilities…

Re: GOLDEN COINS
Baby if you’ll give me all of your love
According to the site of Keith Flynn the song was submitted for the movie but not used. Later on recorded for Double trouble.
In the song selection(s) for Harum scarum are mentioned a lot of rejected demo versions but this song is not mentioned. Is there any other information available about selection for Harem scarum?

To me, that would be during the "Girl Happy" sessions.

I really like those DF remixes. The great Grady Martin's guitar solo and Floyd Cramer's rocking piano on Hey Little Girl is fun to listen to.bajo wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 9:10 pmWell, if I may, I take the DF mixes of this album. Re: GOLDEN COINS
Acetate with 9 songs for the movie Harem holiday;
Recorded 11 songs for the movie and 9 songs to be used; Mirage and My desert serenade should be omitted.
However at the end Animal instinct and Wisdom of the ages are cut.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
It's funny, I always thought those two bonus songs really fit on this album, unlike other bonus songs on soundtracks that often seemed out of place.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
They were recorded for the movie, but not used! That's why they fit so well to fill the album! As with Sand Castles on the PSA album. The best track on that album along with This Is My Heaven!Christopher Brown wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 2:59 pmIt's funny, I always thought those two bonus songs really fit on this album, unlike other bonus songs on soundtracks that often seemed out of place.

Re: GOLDEN COINS
In the revised final product information is mentioned "Sand Castles" is sung on the beach at dawn with Jan (Donna Butterworth). It must be a recorded overdub with Donna Butterworth on the track.bajo wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 7:18 pmThey were recorded for the movie, but not used! That's why they fit so well to fill the album! The scene was finally cut from the movie.
