Song Nr. 16 is not the Elvis Song I´m Yours. This is another Composition. Not the Don Roberston / Hal Blair Song.

Nice post.

It's always been interesting to me how much Eddy Arnold's work spilled over into some of Presley's recordings, either by coincidence or intent. Arnold scored a LOT of #1 country hits in his career, more than two dozen at least.

He was an RCA Victor recording artist, too. Of course, we know the management connection, and certainly that's a key fact.

I wrote about it recently.

Meet The New Boss, Same As The Old Boss --> Parker '49!

Of the three dozen titles you compiled, these may be heard as an influence, the rest are via other artists Elvis liked:

I'll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)
I Really Don't Want To Know
Just Call Me Lonesome
How's The World Treating You?
Mary In The Morning

Interestingly, Elvis was the first to record Robertson and Blair's "I Met Her Today," but Eddy released it on a single B-side two years before the Presley track got out.

Where did you get information on Elvis covering "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"? That's not something I'm familiar with.

The author, Stephen Miller, is using conjecture on page 127. And "You Belong To My Heart" actually does exist on tape from that day.

Although almost claiming those untaped "Million Dollar Quartet" songs as fact, later in the book he changes his view on the one in question. On page 208 he writes about Jerry Lee Lewis performing the song at an April 23, 1981 gig in Böblingen, near Stuttgart, West Germany, as part of a one-off show with Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Survivors_Live

He suggests it "might" have been done at Sun during the 1956 jam session.
A robust version of 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken', which might have been sung at the original session before the tapes started rolling, was a particular crowd-pleaser.

https://books.google.com/books?id=UDr_AgAAQBAJ&pg=PT208

So maybe it shouldn't be listed. I do not doubt, though, that Elvis well knew the song, and most especially the renditions done by Hovie Lister And The Statesmen Quartet. The same thought should be applied to the author's citation of the unrecorded "The Old Rugged Cross."

As for Elvis, there is no known recording with him singing "The Old Rugged Cross." But he likely knew and sang it as far back as a child in church in Tupelo, and it is a long-rumoured song from the 12-04-1956 "Million Dollar Quartet" jam at Sun Studios. And his 1969 Memphis recording of "Who Am I" includes a verse which mentions "the old rugged cross."

In a book by the Imperials piano player Joe Mocheo, he explicitly mentions the song as one of the gospel numbers Elvis often sang in his Las Vegas suite after shows. If any of these late-night jams ever surfaces, maybe we'll hear Presley's version, at long last.

That's a great post. ;-)

How wonderful would it be if tapes of Elvis at home around the piano surfaced? Be it gospel, pop, rock 'n' roll or r&b, you know it would be an absolute delight, and feature songs we don't have, like "The Old Rugged Cross" or "It's Only Make Believe." But the years keep rolling by, and none of us will be here forever.

He's not referencing Eddy Arnold, though. They're both covering "The Tennessee Waltz" by Patti Page, one of her "signature" songs, and a #1 hit in 1951.

Added at empty spot 12, because of the recording date I striked it through however. Thanks!
