It's certainly not because the sound quality is dawgone awful...but because very, very few were made, thus the large price tag.

That's a very rare Lennon album in any format and the Beatles one is from 1982 which is a bit late for 8-tracks though I think the last ones were done around 1986 for record clubs.

The Lennon tape, produced by Adam VIII (bootleg label) were lifted out of the "Rock N Roll" album and they subsequently got sued by Capitol records since they obviously had no rights to the tracks, and production ceased. However, just a handful were made.
