ELVIS IN VEGAS 1972 (JANUARY 26TH - FEBRUARY 23RD)

Sat Nov 12, 2011 11:30 pm

This time we starts out with the beginning of the year and Elvis' first Vegas engagement of 1972. We got 15 shows + some multi-track recordings from different shows available here. Some new songs were on the setlist, and two of them became very powerful showtoppers, An American Trilogy and You Gave Me A Mountain. See See Rider is the opening song for the very first time.

January 26th 1972 Opening Show - Soundboard Recording

Elvis is starting the circus with a See See Rider in full drive, follow by a new song for the season, Never Been To Spain. He welcomes the audience and introducing himself as Howard Hughes. You Gave Me A Mountain is beautifully treated when he does it in the front of an audience for the first time and Elvis' new record Until It's Time For You To Go is following right after. Polk Salad Annie is done without the talking intro this time.
It's a very lighthearted Elvis who sings the ol' ones here, Love Me, Little Sister/Get Back, All Shook Up, Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog (Elvis sings the words "Oh, God have Mercy........" in the start of Hound Dog), A Big Hunk Of Love and a great Lawdy Miss Clawdy. After Lawdy Miss Clawdy we hear performs An American Trilogy for the first time ever.
Elvis introduces Sammy Davis Jr. and Comedian Red Skelton during Can't Help Falling In love.
The recording of this show starts a few seconds into See See Rider, so the 2001 Theme, Opening Riff and the first seconds of See See Rider is missing.

January 29th 1972 Midnight Show - Audience Recording with bad+ sound

The setlist is standard for this season, and during this show Elvis does Don't Be Cruel without the usual medley with Teddy Bear. Elvis talks very little, but he shows that he is in great mood when you hear the performance and the fun on stage before Little Sister/Get Back. Special highlights for the old hits is One Night, Don't Be Cruel and Lawdy Miss Clawdy. The Strauss opening and the Closing Riff is incomplete on this recording.

The sound on this recording is distant, but quite good. It also sounds like the tape is running a little bit fast, but it's not annoying. Elvis introduces singer and actor Jim Nabors after the Introduction Of The Band.
Charlie Hodge is introduced as "my water boy...".

I think it's very interesting too. It gives us a good clue what's left in the valuts from this season, so maybe someday Ernst & Co gives us a new FTD from the Standing Room Only project. I've collected these tracks into my own concert cdr collection to make the series more complete. :smt006

A show with a very standard setlist. Elvis introduces Johnny Tillotson after the band introductions. Typical for this season is that Elvis seems in good mood, but he's talks very little so the times he had some funny comments is very rare. Here he shows it during the start of Hound Dog. Both Hound Dog and A Big Hunk Of Love is worth listening too here.
The Last part of Brigde Over Troubled Water and the beginning of Suspicious Minds is missing on this recording. The recording itself is a little distant, but not too bad.
