Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
Which outtakes/alternate takes do you consider better than the released master ?
I could think of some, like the solo version of "Lonely Man", for instance.
I would be interested to compile such a compilation for friends.

Joe Krein interview with Sherril Nielsen: "YOU KNOW YOU FORGET HOW GOOD HE REALLY WAS. I SAID MY GOODNESS. YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE WITH HIM YOU ARE SO WRAPPED UP DOING THE SHOW, BUT HERE NOW 20 YEARS LATER, I HEAR HIM AND REALIZE WHAT A GREAT TALENT HE WAS. HE WAS THE REAL DEAL.

Your example is one of the few that I might choose over the released master. Most of the choices Elvis made, when he was making the call, were right on the money.James27 wrote:Which outtakes/alternate takes do you consider better than the released master ?

A few others, songs issued in Elvis' lifetime, that spring to mind:
"I Beg Of You" (1957) - first version
"Ain't That Loving You Baby" (1958) - uptempo arrangement
"I Need Somebody To Lean On" (1963) - soundtrack version
"Baby What You Want Me To Do" (1968) - complete, unedited small combo version
"Always On My Mind" (1972) - alternate version seen in 1981's "This Is Elvis"
.

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I've always been partial to the alternate versions of "She Thinks I Still Care" and "Amazing Grace." Also, I like the alternate version of "Little Egypt" better than the master, but that may be because I think the sound is better.

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
Amazing Grace is a good example of a superior version. I would also suggest the version of And I Love You So from Platinum.

Doc: I Need Somebody To Lean On record version and soundtrack version, to my ears, are the same. Are you talking of the alternate take that has been released by FTD? That's good but the studio master is perfect.

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
These are just a few alternates that are better than the masters that featured on his Albums:
"Shake, Rattle and Roll" (Alternate Take 8.)
"Ain't That Loving You Baby" (Alternate Take 11)
"Pocketful of Rainbows" (1st Version Take 28 - Alternate Master) [p.s. I'm pretty sure it's this one, the faster version with the much better bass line]
"Lonely Man" ('Solo' Master)
"Today, Tomorrow and Forever" (Duet Master)
"And I Love You So" (Alternate Take 1)
I also have soft spots for these alternate takes:
"(Let's Have a) Party" (Take 7 - Alternate Master)
"King Creole" (1st Version Take 18 - Alternate Master)
"Your Cheatin' Heart" (Take 9 - Alternate Master)
"There Is So Much World to See" (1st Version Take 10 - Alternate Master)
And there's loads more I just can't be bothered to go through them all. Many of the 1950's alternates are superb.

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I think Doc is referring to the version on the soundtrack with the overdubs. Nice version!

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I Love You Because, take 2
I Beg Of You, first version
Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello, version with that awfull doorbell-triangle mixed down
Fairytale, never one of my favourite Elvis songs but the version on Great Country Songs is much better than originally released
Too Much Monkey Business, very hard to make choice between released and rockabilly version

The take of "Green Green Grass Of Home" on "Great Country Songs" is waaaaay better than the master.
The spoken part with the sigh just gives the song so much more feeling!

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I enjoy listening to the alternate take of "Fame and Fortune" that is in a higher key and was oringinally released on A Legendary Performer Volume 3. In addition, I really like the uptempo version of "Loving You" that is used over the opening credits.

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I agree. There is also some echo or other effect to make greater the difference when Elvis is thinking the song (in the scene) and when he starts singing. But it is the same master take.JimmyCool wrote:The movie version is the master take with additional overdubs (saxophone)stevelecher wrote:Doc: I Need Somebody To Lean On record version and soundtrack version, to my ears, are the same. Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
No, they're not quite. The overdubbed saxophone that was added at MGM in early September 1963 adds another dollop of melancholy to one of Elvis' finest soundtrack tunes. It was not included on the RCA release in 1964.stevelecher wrote:Doc: I Need Somebody To Lean On record version and soundtrack version, to my ears, are the same.

What bootleg CD can this movie version be found on?drjohncarpenter wrote:The overdubbed saxophone that was added at MGM in early September 1963 adds another dollop of melancholy to one of Elvis' finest soundtrack tunes.
Also, speaking of movie versions - The actual movie soundtrack version of "C'mon Everybody" really comes to life with the overdubs!

I don't think the movie version (with the overdubs) is on any bootleg.

I remember hearing the overdubbed version of this on the radio in the mid-1980s. I've never run across it since, though.chevyford wrote:The actual movie soundtrack version of "C'mon Everybody" really comes to life with the overdubs!

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I like this alternate a lot, too, for the same reason mentioned. However, I wonder if it only stands out so much to us because it is different from the master that we have heard for so long? In other words, if we had always heard it this way, would it be as powerful?chevyford wrote:Makes one wonder why Elvis didn't choose it as the master!JimmyCool wrote:It sends chills down my spine... very emotional, I like it too.Rockin_John wrote:The take of "Green Green Grass Of Home" on "Great Country Songs" is waaaaay better than the master.
