An Afternoon In The Garden
The album is doing quite well on the Billboard album chart (No 85) and has racked up a reasonable Soundscan total. Could any US members give a clue to why this is happening... its price and availability etc? Thanks.

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
It has to be related to the fact that it sells for $5.00 and is in Walmart. Walmart is one of the few places to still buy cd's in most areas. The price point is just right for most casual buyers. Most other Elvis titles don't appear for long (the reissued movie soundtracks most notably) but this one seems in abundance at Walmart stores.
Also, if I am not mistaken, Walmart is the largest retailer of recorded music in the U.S.
That said- most stores-even Walmart- have drastically reduced the inventory they carry on CD in general. I can see the day when purchasing a CD in most areas of the United States will be done only online.
The ELVIS IS BACK release came out in early March. I wasn't able to obtain a copy locally until just last weekend! I finally found it in stock (2 copies) at BEST BUY.
The end of CD may be even more near than we thought.

Barnes & Noble sells numerous Elvis stuff that you can also order and the same goes for Walmart.

Yes they do....all online. Store inventory is miniscule comparatively.

Is there a reason this title is doing better than other Elvis titles? I would assume the pricing would be similar or is it that an abundance of afternoon was laying around?

Go to Walmart and the answer will be staring you in the face, in the form of a giant bargain box featuring a large photo of the cover.

Hey that's great to hear that MSG is back on the charts. Do you reckon it might have something to do with this January Poll where Elvis show fared 11th.

Jeez even the god-awful Village People rated higher What's going on . Also not even the famous Elton John-John Lennon 28-11-1974 concert was mentioned.

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
It's pretty amazing that an album that was released 14 years ago just now reached it's highest position. When it came out in 1997 it didn't chart. Now it's at #85. What an accomplishment!
Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
I think it is so awesome that an album that was released 14 years ago is up to 85 on the billboard charts another accomplishment for elvis which is so great!!

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
Ii the same pricing and promotion by Wal-Mart was put into 'Elvis Sings For Children and Grown-ups Too" then that album would enter the charts.david57 wrote:I think it is so awesome that an album that was released 14 years ago is up to 85 on the billboard charts another accomplishment for elvis which is so great!!
Ii's not an accomplishment for Elvis but a marketing coup.

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
Whatever the reason, it's a nice positive to see Elvis on the charts.
Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
If it cost $5 when it came out in 1997 it would have charted then too! Still, it is fun to see Elvis in the charts. If only the EIB Legacy could have gained some traction...it was a great price for two discs!

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
The era of archival product selling in impressive figures is over. There infrastructure of music retail has been greatly diminished. Wal-Mart is not a traditional retailer. It may offer CDs, but few people actually go to Wal-Mart for the purpose of buying music, unless a particular title is one of the few exclusives they offer from time to time. The music sales are typically secondary sales by people doing other shopping - that is a well known fact. Releases like the Legacy Edition for Elvis Is Back have nowhere to sell or to be marketed and presented to "window shoppers" scanning CD aisles. Casual music consumers didn't even know it was released. Casual music consumers aren't reading Rolling Stone (where there was a blurb), they aren't scanning Amazon for archival Elvis releases, etc. How can a label get out the word to casual, mainstream consumers that a great, affordable archival package has just been released? The casual consumers are buying "An Afternoon At The Garden" because they are at Wal-Mart for other reasons and see a cheap Presley title in the bargain bins for $5. They figure, it is cheap, it is Elvis, it has a cool looking cover, it is related to Madison Square Garden, and worth picking up for all those reasons. Most probably don't even know it was released back in '97.bquick wrote:If it cost $5 when it came out in 1997 it would have charted then too! Still, it is fun to see Elvis in the charts. Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
Three comments/questions:
-The casual CD buyer gets value for money in this deal: Elvis delivered in NY, the show is great and the sound is above average!
-Do we know how many units are sold so far?
-Given the in store, national promotion at WAL MART at $5, is Nr 85 something to get excited about, or is it a sign the Elvis CD era is over?
Cheers.

LPs are a niche market. It is doubtful mom and pop from middle America are going to snag some vinyl along with their toilet paper and drano.ritchie valens wrote:they should start releasing lps in wal marts since the sales are over powering cd sales.

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
Interesting to see the conflicting views on this.
By the time the album charted for the first time (in Billboards Catalogue chart) in the last week of Oct 2010, it had already racked up sales of 194,000 which indicated that it had been bubbling under the chart radar for a considerable time, possibly years. We already know that the original "Live at Madison Square Garden" album had been a consistent seller over the years and that many artists have had successful releases named after the famous live venue... its an extremely famous building that will sell live albums on its own merit.
So that might partly explain its consistent sales over a number of years, meaning Robt could be spot on when he indicates that media attention about the MSG poll could have had something to do with the recent increase in the albums sales and likewise as elvisjock pointed out, Walmarts "bin" promotions must be helping and were no doubt designed to tie in with publicity surrounding the poll. Throw in the recent SE DVD and youtube promotion, and (as others have mentioned), some subtle planning at Sony incl via the record club, and EPE could soon have another Gold album on the wall.

Just too add to this, toilet paper is on special on Walmart! Seriously, like the Doc said, we'll take it!midnightx wrote:LPs are a niche market. Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
CDs may be dying but Sony will come up with something better than the CD. Ipods are for those who wanna have their music in portable form without carrying around CDs. Look for something in between an Ipod and a CD with much better sound quality where album covers and liner notes will still be available and where more space can be used for longer playing time. I heard from a reliable source who works within the music business that the future of music is going to be in HD surround sound and that headphones will be made for surround sound compatible. Think HDTV audio. Have you seen the new commercial with Alicia Keys talking about how music was meant to sound? Like coming straight from the studio into your home or ears. This is what music will sound like in the distant future.
With HDA mastering, Elvis' music could get better treatment and sound a whole lot clearer in the near future.

Can you see the future? I don't think so. Nobody knows what tomorrow may bring. For all we know the 8-track could make a comeback down the road. Doubtful but always a possibility. Anything is possible.midnightx wrote:The masses are never going to embrace physical product again like in the past.
If it's portable and handy then they might want it again.

Re: An Afternoon In The Garden
The ease in which casual music consumers obtain and listen to music is key. No one is going to go back and embrace a format which includes physical product that is played on portable devices.vivaelvis_72 wrote:Can you see the future? I don't think so.
