Ernst Jorgenson : The DVD being a new medium, you have to negotiate from scratch, and I’m not exaggerating when I say there will be people coming in asking for $1000 for the use of a song as an advance, but there will be someone coming in asking for a million. This is what happened with ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’ on TTWII SE. At the last minute the owner came in asking for so much money. Everybody needs to be paid the same, otherwise everybody will increase their price and make it unworkable.

The 30th Golden Globe Award ceremony was held on Sunday, January 28, 1973 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Presley was at the Las Vegas Hilton, in his suite between shows. He was watching from the bathroom when the news broke that "Elvis On Tour" won, and came hopping out, excited over the honor.*

GREAT, as usual. When will the book be published? I want a copy.

Some additional thoughts:

1) "Elvis On Tour" shared the 1972 Golden Globe Best Documentary Film award with "Walls of Fire."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walls_of_Fire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30th_Golden_Globe_Awards#Best_Documentary_Film

2) The 30th Golden Globe Award ceremony was held on Sunday, January 28, 1973 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Presley was at the Las Vegas Hilton, in his suite between shows. He was watching from the bathroom when the news broke that "Elvis On Tour" won, and came hopping out, excited over the honor.

3) It's clear by Bob Abel's statement that the entire April 5, 1972 show was preserved on audio and videotape:
I took a 3/4 inch Sony Portapak with me when I previewed the show in Buffalo, to videotape the concert so we could study the music and study all his moves ...
This is significant as one of them later said Buffalo was even better than the April 9 ES in Hampton Roads.

Also note, the Sony machine is spelled "Portapak."

Fantastic & fascinating thread, Gentlemen.

Btw, . . . . (fast feeling) those first 7 pages of handwritten notes posted by the OP are in EP's own hand (to my eyes*). Like I said, fascinating.

Really great article thanks very much for this.

It's interesting every time you read about the Buffolo April 5th show they only talk about 1 camera being at the concert filming from the front row on video tape when this is not the case.

In Elvis on Tour you can see another cameraman behind the stage filming the show weather he shot the whole show or not we don't know but at least i'v counted more than 1 camera.

Is there any photos that can prove any more where present at this gig ?

I read once that he paced around the room shouting "Son of a bitch, I've won a Golden Globe!"

Also FANTASTIC post Davide.

David -

Here is a syndicated excerpt of New York Times film critic Vincent Canby's review of "Elvis On Tour"

Image

Eugene Register-Guard, Sunday July 8, 1973

The full review ran three weeks earlier:

How the West Was, and How Elvis Is?
By Vincent Canby, New York Times
Sunday, June 17, 1973

Also, Alan Hanson, author of the essential Elvis 57: The Final Fifties Tours, wrote a great piece on the film here:

A few other Buffalo sequences are in "Elvis On Tour" and "This Is Elvis."

the clip of him running into the vehicle is buffalo right? and the footage of him from behind the stage?

what i mainly meant is what about the actual concert? i am puzzled why we haven't seen anything of that or most of Richmond? there is plenty of the Hampton show and Greensboro ashow, a few songs from San Antonio but no Richmond or Buffalo.

The 8mm fan footage that has been seen on Youtube doesn't look anywhere near as exciting as the following concerts they captured for the film....

What does this have to do with the opinion of the MGM directors?

Are they wrong about Hampton Roads too?

I'v got questions that i need anwers to

1.Has all the 55+Hours of footage been digitized ?

2.Are all the multi tracks from the shows in order ?

3.do we only have 4 shows recordered multi track or was there more ?

4.What other shows were recorded on soundboard ?

What format was buffolo recorded onto vhs ? reel to reel video umatic ? and what is the condition of the tape ?

Brilliant topic.

One of the pics shows a camera filming Elvis in Hampton Roads the afternoon concert. It says this is the MGM crew rehearsing. Where is this footage nowadays? Does it still exist?

Was it erased to film the evening show?

Great Topic

why can't anyone come out and say where this footage is now ?

Who owns the rights ? do EPE Lisa Marie Pricilla even give a crap about this golden footage ?

or do they want to sell another 500 Elvis ash trays at the Graceland shop across the road it gets me very upset knowing all this great footage of our man is going to waste when the footage should be used in tv speacials new doco's and dvd releases

Yes, it is from Buffalo. So that proves we have another camera operating that night. Maybe it is also same camera that caught Elvis running until the car where Vernon was waiting as seen in the movie.

Davide,

What's the story / source on the handwritten notes I referenced above? (Mainly because I find it odd that "EP" is referring to himself in the 3rd person.)

The handwritten notes were made by a member of the Cinema Associates film crew, and could have well been made by Sylvia Alexander, as she mentions making timing notes during the live performances.

I have been a bit slow in getting the Blu-Ray release, but I am very pleased with the look of this release. For a film that was shot on 16mm, it looks great - with any film grain still being intact.

The notes are not like anything Elvis would have ever done.
