Who Wants My Elvis Collection?

This probably should not be in the All Elvis section, so whoever sees fit to move it, have at it.

I'm having surgery next Friday. For several days following the surgery, I will be unable to talk. But, by God, I can still type (if I feel like it). However, in the unlikely event that I don't pull through, I'm going to have to do something with all of these damned CD's, DVD's, books, hound dogs, teddy bears, pictures, posters, etc.

Would anyone be interested in them? You have less than two weeks to convince me why you should be the one to get all of this junk. Now, I don't want anyone pining for me to sign out on the operating table, so don't get your hopes up. However, I'd rather someone get some good use out of this than have my wife try to figure out what to do with it and it ends up somewhere it shouldn't.

It's about time I figured out what I'm gonna do with all of this stuff someday anyway.

Anyone want to be included in my will?

It's one of those Vince Everett surgeries.

For the past couple of months, I have been really hoarse. Sometimes when I open my trap to talk, nothing comes out but a squeak. It's kind of embarrassing in a production meeting at work. I went to the doctor and he looked at me and asked me if I'd ever smoked. I told him that I'd never smoked in my life. He then sent me to a specialist who saw a "growth" on my right vocal chord. He tested it and it was benign, but said it had to go asap. He told me following the surgery that there was to be absolutely no talking for three days. THREE DAYS!!! What the hell? There are some that I know that are praising Jesus for the silence. It's gonna be extremely sore when it's over, so I'm told....yay!

I still get the guitar out and jam with friends on occasion. My fear is that when I start talking again, I might sound like Kathy Westmoreland. I love her voice, I just don't care to sound like her.

Anyway, it started me wondering...what am I gonna do with my collection someday?

Hey Rob I'm sure you'll pull through so you'll have to hang on to that collection a little longer... besides there's no way in hell you're getting to see Elvis before me!!! Make sure you bring a laptop to the hospital in case you have to stay for a couple of days... can't do without that razor-sharp wit for more than a day!!! All the best to you... God speed.

That's a toughie.

Having "liquidated" my Elvis LP collection (well, a good portion of what I thought were the lesser titles) during the '90s CD boom when I was least into Elvis for the first time ever, I know the strong sting of realizing you've just lopped off your prize records once you sober up...

I have this idea of quietly selling off titles ...once I know time is growing thin but that's going to be hard to do, save for all the live concerts I can safely say "heard 'em, I don't need every '76 show."

The better solution for me has been to quietly cultivate true budding Elvis fans in the family. So far, so good. But to make an FECC style fan? Unlikely. I think that would be an unfair thing to wish for.

Now to your questions, yes I have recently given it some thought - not in preparation for death, but in preparation for retirement I have three children, though none are fans like I am, and my wife tolerates my "habit" at best, so I thought I may start selling or giving parts of it away, some to the kids, but the rest I'm not sure - I can't take it all with me from a house in Canada that can hold it all to a little place in the south of France that can't (there, I just thought of a reason to buy the Complete Masters). Anyway, after collecting all these years, and continuing to do so, it's weird to think of selling or giving it all away, but we can't take it with us when we kick it, so I think it's best to give it away to those who would enjoy it.

What to do with collections is an interesting question.

I think I should write out directions in my will for how to best dispose of my items. I have a valuable movie poster collection and would hate to see that sold as one lot and not have its real potential value realised.
My children aren't interested in it but they could make hundreds of thousands dollars from it.Good point Rob - time to get to work
