Burn CD's for a "new" Elvis Fan
I met someone who liked Elvis in a "normal" way. I told him that I would burn some CD's for him to be a real Elvis fan..
I made some mp3 CD's for him and came up with this:
- The 50's, 60's and 70's Masters Box (15 CD's)
- Tiger Man (68 comeback)
- Comeback Special Cd 1 and Cd 2
- All Shook Up-Live 1969
- On Stage 1970
- Elvis Internationale 1971 (Live bootleg)
- Afternoon In The Garden-Live 1972
- Aloha From Hawaii-Live 1973
- Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis 1974
- Southern Nights-Live 1975
- Final Homecoming-Live 1976
- Elvis In Concert 1977
- The Ultimate Gospel
Did I miss something ? I wanted him to have an all around look in Elvis' carreer through the years....And just forget about all those outtakes we have...

Re: Burn CD's for a "new" Elvis Fan
Nice list!
I do miss the Aug 12 1970 MS and Elvis in Person on that list.
If the person don´t mind a little poorer sound quality then the 1961 Hawaii show
should be included.

Pretty heavy on the live stuff. The three Essential Box sets were a great start and I would have let him digest that. Probably wouldn't burn, for a casual fan, EIC or Southern Nights.

I would either make a disc with "Moody blue" and "FEPB" on one disc or do a disc of the "jungle room sessions"

Imo if you give a new fan so much in bulk. He/she will not appreciate everything and skip a lot imo. I think this takes (to really get into) years.

- Handing 30 CDs of Elvis to a newbie is like offering an Alhambra truck to someone who wanted a glass of water

Waaaayyyyy too much product for a non-fan to handle. You could buy him a copy of "Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight" - 4 almost perfect discs of music, 100 tracks, and some liner notes.

Agreed. I have certainly introduced casual fans to deeper cuts and titles, but I have never bombarded them with such a massive amount of product. Ton simply could have made a CD of all the My Boy studio takes and some live versions and he would have created a super-fan.Matthew wrote:Waaaayyyyy too much product for a non-fan to handle. .....definitely overboard here.....needs to be a bit more tidy and concentrate less on the live material except for some of 68, 69, & 70 stuff........just my 2 cents.......probably not worth that much even.....

Excellent points.drjohncarpenter wrote: - Handing 30 CDs of Elvis to a newbie is like offering an Alhambra truck to someone who wanted a glass of water
Why not just start out with Elvis' LP's, EP's and singles in chronological order? Maybe do one or two years at a time.
Live recordings and alternate takes I wouldn't give until much, much later.
Just a thought.

Re: Burn CD's for a "new" Elvis Fan
I think the 3 soundboard CD"s can go for now, and i don't think you need 3 CD"s of 68 material yet either - that's over kill for what is often a more satisfying visual spectacle than audio experience.
I think the thing to do is stick with the 3 box sets, 50's, 60's and 70's. then get their feedback, find out what they enjoyed the most and go from there. There's no point giving them loads of live 70's stuff if the thing that catches their interest is the glorious early 60's masters. Similarly, if the thing that blows them away in Unchained Melody, or some of the later work, then go for the live stuff then.

Re: Burn CD's for a "new" Elvis Fan
The problem with such releases like the "Good Rockin' Tonight" set is it's presented as the ultimate 4 CD's on Elvis Presley' career - yet without such crucial songs like "Trying to Get to You", "Anything That's Part of You" and "Long Black Limousine" (which must surely rank amongst his finest ever recordings) and major Number 1 Hits like "Wooden Heart" and "The Wonder of You" (both staying 6 weeks at Number 1 on the UK chart) and the US Top 10 B Side "I Got Stung", it really fails for me. Coupled with the added blow of including songs like "Adam and Evil", "This Is My Heaven" and the rather mediocre "70's Rocker" "For the Heart" it really could have been done better.
But despite the limitations, that 4-Disc set from SONY is probably the best place to start as there's nothing better out there officially.
But for those curios in what I'd propose as the ultimate 4 CD overview of Elvis Presley's career, here it is. I've packed each CD to the acceptable limit and tried to include every major hit, every Presley standard and every crucial recording whilst trying to cover every aspect, genre and time-frame in his career. It's no mean feat and took hours of deliberation over tracklisting but I don't think this can be bettered as a 4 CD retrospect on Elvis Presley.

first its a nice list but to much "heavy" live stuff for just a regular fan....in my opinion
i would say give him the following CDs :
1. Golden Records vol. 1
2. Gold records vol.2 - 50,000,000 Elvis fans cant be wrong
3. Golden records vol. 3
4. Gold records Vol. 4
5. Elvis is Back !
6. From Elvis in Memphis
7. On Stage
8. Aloha From Hawaii
9. Gospel compilation - from all 3 gospel albums -like 25 tracks
10 . Movies tracks compilation - somthing like 27 songs( from 1956-1969 movies)
Those 10 CDs would be great for a regular fan. even more than great
