Elvis -- The Final Sullivan Visit, Jan 6, 1957

Below are some nice shots from Elvis' final Ed Sullivan visit in New York on Sunday, January 6, 1957.

Some are from the CBS-TV camera rehearsal, a few from the broadcast.

Hard to grasp he was really a young kid still, over there. A timeless and ageless quality was over him in those days.

What always bugged me about the third Sullivan appearance -- besides Elvis being shown "from the waist up" -- was how the elaborate set and his rhythm section are barely seen at any point in the program.

Well while we're at it I had a few more on the home system. The ones in your first post John I had in a set of eight (excuse the duplication), I thought I had got them from the pic section

No i seen 'em i posted them awhile back and seems ive deleted my own post when i tryed to put the link up,but anyhow...
... like i aways have said better to see them twice than never at all!!

That's an example of what I meant by the elaborate sets created for the January 1957 program.

They went basically unseen during the broadcast, which strongly implies the decision to broadcast Elvis "from the waist up" was done late in the process.

It would be neat to learn if there was a "behind the scenes" battle, who was involved, and who took which side.

Usually in situations like this, they just cave in to the sponsers demands.

No big deal since Elvis got his "message" thru to the teenagers, and it made him more controversial, ie. popular.

Yeah, but how cool would his gyrations have looked in full-bodied glory.

I mean, closeups are fine, but waste the effect that those sets had ?!

Man, lucky for us these photos survived .....
