Man behind the mask 1957

Extract from an interview with Gloria Pall:
...I saw him at a Halloween party and I didn't recognise him at first because he had a mask on and he was wearing a black leather outfit - motorcycle garb...

It's confusing, isn't it ?

He clearly wasn't dressed like that in the photos..............

Although her description of Elvis clad in leather and with the entire Memphis Mafia present doesn't fit the picture it seems like she actually did attend the party and would be the girl in the picture with Elvis.

Artistic interpretation indeed. That entire Elvis chapter reads like something from the Lucy de Barbin files.

The funny thing is, Elvis almost didn't go to this holiday shindig.

But he did, and at Devore's home he met the King.

And the mask was a special gift, from a man.

George Klein's recent memoir tells all:

Halloween fell a few days after the Pan Pacific shows, and our group was thrilled to have been invited to a party thrown by Sy Devore, the top Hollywood designer known as the "tailor to the stars." Except that the invitation was really for Elvis, and he didn't want to go. The more excitedly we talked about the party, the less interested he was in it, and when somebody made the mistake of saying "Everyone's going to be there," that about clinched it: He didn't want anything to do with the Halloween party. But he didn't count on an early-evening visit from Billy Murphy, who turned up with a handmade Halloween present for Elvis: a beautifully put-together, gold Mardi Gras-style mask. Elvis took one look at Murphy's mask and said, "All right, we're going to the party."

I walked into one of the party rooms and saw a costume that topped them all: Nat King Cole was dressed as Elvis, with a black leather jacket, pasted-on sideburns, and a guitar around his neck. Elvis and I had always loved Cole's music, and I went right up to him and introduced myself. He was extremely nice, and when he heard I was with Elvis, he said he really wanted to meet him. I went to find Elvis, and at first it was hard to get him away from the pretty girls he was talking to. But as soon as I told him who Nat King Cole was dressed as, he had me lead him there. I'll never forget the sight of Mardi Gras Elvis standing there talking to Nat King Cole Presley.

The meeting with Cole may well explain actress Gloria Pall's memory lapse. Cole's "black leather/Elvis" costume must have gotten jumbled in her memory of that night.

Share0Print......LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gloria Pall, the sultry hostess of a 1950s Los Angeles TV show that was canceled because her character's sexy poses and flirtatious comments were deemed too hot for television, has died.

Pall died Dec. 30 of heart failure at a Burbank hospital, her son Jefferson Kane told the Los Angeles Times in a story published online Saturday. She was 85.

Pall was a former model and showgirl when she was cast by KABC-TV in 1954 to introduce each week's romantic movie. Appearing as "Voluptua," the statuesque Pall welcomed viewers with a breathy coo to her boudoir and tell them to "Relax, take off your shoes, loosen your ties."

During the show, she caressed a bearskin rug and made costume changes behind a translucent screen.

As she signed off, clad only in a men's pajama top, she kissed the camera goodbye.

The station canceled the show after seven weeks amid pressure from religious and parent groups, and lackluster commercial sponsorship. The protests attracted national media attention.

Pall said her character was simply being suggestive. She described her over-the-top character as "corny not porny."

She also had a brief acting career and had memorable roles. In an image from the 1957 film "Jailhouse Rock," her legs frame Elvis Presley's face at a burlesque show; she clutches Kirk Douglas' arm in a scene from 1954's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"; and in "Crimson Kimono," a classic 1959 film noir, Pall played a stripper named Sugar Torch, who gets shot in the opening scene.

She later became a Los Angeles real estate agent.
