Kentucky Rain is a very good song and performance.

Not "strictly country" IMO.

The lack of a decent 'hook' reduced its commercial appeal...........

One of my favorite Elvis records. I wouldn't call it a country song, but maybe it is.

i've noticed that too even though I like the song

Elvis singles were all hitting the top 10 in the U.K. at that time but Kentucky Rain only hit #21

I do think of Kentucky Rain country song it was written by Eddie Rabbitt who had written some songs that were recorded by country stars Roy Dusky and George Morgan before Elvis recorded Kentucky Rain and he later became a popular country performer himself.
If Elvis hadn't of recorded Kentucky Rain I could see a big time country singer cutting the song instead like Bobby Bare or Charley Pride.

Oh, I wouldn't argue with that.

It simply lacked a chorus that would make you sing it to yourself while in the shower, after hearing it on the radio a couple of times !

That factor kept it low in the charts.

Quite possible but what about IN THE GHETTO? Where´s the chorus?

Well, that line in the ghetto echoed by the girls was repeated enough to lodge in the mind...............

It's an epic masterwork. Elvis' vocal is on the absolute edge of hysteria without toppling over and Moman's production is booming. The shifts in mood and tempo are shattering. Elvis almost pitiful... "with the rain in my shoes" SEARCHING FOR YOU!!!! Horns, voices all come crashing.

They take this above average little song about a guy whose girlfriend left him without notice into an obsessive search for personal meaning. The way Elvis sings this song, the lead character doesn't want to find his girlfriend, he needs it in the way we need to breathe. His entire sense of self is wrapped up in this relationship.

I always thought the "cold Kentucky Rain" bit was a pretty good hook. Maybe it's relatively modest chart performance was caused by overkill. In the US the song exploded on the charts moving 50 positions in one week. Whatever its original performance, it has been one of Elvis' best loved and most played songs in the intervening decades. It has been endlessly repackaged and was a staple of oldies and adult contemporary radio until the past few years. It is far better known and loved today than "Don't Cry Daddy" which did better on the charts and in its sales run.

It's an excellent song and one of many highlights of the Memphis sessions. It's just unfathomable that he ceased to perform the song so soon after including it in his show.

Anywho, the song has remained a favorite for decades here in Kentuckiana.

Kentucky Rain paints images in the mind as well as pretty much any Elvis song.

You are there with the guy, soaking wet, showing a photo to some old grey bearded fools.

I hadn't thought of that, but you are probably right. I thought the vocal was great and it was one of his first good songs after the movie stuff ended, but I guess it did lack a catchy chorus. I always thought it should have gotten higher on the charts.
