April 19th '57 Candid (Att. Brian)!

Sun Apr 18, 2010 4:15 am

Brian, I've added this more unedited 'motorcycle' b/w shot to my 19/4/57 folder. I've uploaded it here on the oft-chance that you may not have it. It's rare to see those two windows open. Anyway, have a nice day/ evening! Cheers :smt023

For those who don't know, but the image of Presley that adorned the cover of the 'This Is Elvis' soundtrack alblum was indeed taken on this day. It was taken out the front of the mansion with the windows to the dining room directly behind him. This may be useless trivia for some, but it may be interesting to others.

Yvonne was cute -- Laurel Goodwin, Elvis' 1962 co-star had a similar look.

'MY WEEKEND WITH ELVIS' FROM MODERN SCREEN

Elvis , she rhapsodizes, called her every night in Hollywood, pleading that she visit him at home. The reason was,of course, that he wanted his mother,Gladys,to meet Yvonne-the first step in any relationship he had with a girl. Friends advised her against going to see him, warning that he was fickle. "How could I tell anyone how sincere and lonely Elvis sounded?" she wondered. On friday of easter weekend, she flew to Memphis.

He was waiting for her at the airport in his shiney pink caddy. Graceland was being renovated , so they went to the house on Audubon Drive.Shocked by how small it seemed,Yvonne had to circumnavigate rooms crowded with furniture Elvis had brought and cartoons full of fan mail(half of it addressed to Gladys)that the besieged family couldn't figure out how to dispose of. Gladys greeted Yvonne at the door and put a motherly arm around her. "We want you to feel at home here, dear."

Then Elvis took her to his bedroom. And what did the twosome do in there? They admired his teddy bears and stuffed animals, and she gave him a little red cap on it's head. Elvis put the chick in the line of honor, bowed, then kissed Yvonne on the tip of her nose.

That first night of their date they ate meat loaf and mashed potatoes at the family dinner table,Elvis explaining that he preferred meat loaf to steak because it was quicker to eat.

Afterwards, Yvonne wanted to dance the bop , but Elvis wasn't feeling well. He had a skin rash,so he and his parents and Yvonne all sat outside in lawn chairs enjoying the evening breeze. With Gladys on one side and Yvonne on the other, Elvis took both their hands and sighed tenderly,"My two best girls!"

Saturday night, they went to a party at record producer Sam Phillip's house. Elvis had to leave because his rash was worse, so he and Yvonne went to the hospital where he got some penicillin to clear it up.Feeling better, he insisted they return to the party.

It was late ,it was raining, many guests had left, the few remaining revelers gathered on the floor in the darkened living room, illuminated only by the flickering fire "It was a thrilling exprience" Yvonne writes . What was the big thrill? Elvis began to sing a religious song He sang the hymns and spirituals he loves so well..on and on, until the day began to break and it was Easter morning.

At dawn the partyers topped off their merriment with scrambled eggs ,cooked just the way Elvis liked them,'hard as rock'.

Text from 'Elvis World' , it would be nice to see the original article?

Funky, I'm glad I could add a few more photos to your collection. In a few of the photos you really have to look twice to see that they are alternates.

E-Cat, thanks so much for the uncropped/edited version of one of the photos.

Barbie, glad you liked the photos. Please feel freee to share some of your 1957 photos. He DID look fabulous in 1957.

davide, thanks for the Diary.
